When a president is impeached and removed from office, the vice president becomes president immediately under Section 1 of the Twenty-Fifth Amendment. Once the vice president assumes the presidency, the new president has the authority to nominate a new vice president under Section 2 of the Twenty-Fifth Amendment. The nominee must then be confirmed by a majority vote in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. This process ensures the vice presidency is filled promptly, preventing a vacancy during the remainder of the presidential term. Under the Twenty-Fifth Amendment, if the president dies—whether by assassination or other cause—the vice president immediately becomes president.
