dat's actually a common old-school 'reflections' technique 🙂

We did something similar with a cave lake in Uncharted Golden Abyss. The cheapest way to get nice reflections was to duplicate most of the cave and invert everything along the water plane.

oh NOW you want ray-tracing, okay 🙄

Doing all that for just a rear view mirror is pretty damn cool

Reminds me of the metro train in Fallout 3, which was actually a hat worn by an NPC... which is apparently easier to do than making a working train.

Clementine will remember this

This is how games have done it forever. Any time you see an older game especially with a mirror, it's literally just another set of models on the other side of the mirror.

How does the mirror know??

The officer(s) be like

The best part is how it's a minute-long tutorial prologue and there's like zero to none mirrors in the rest of the game. Madlads just locked tf in for one scene just because they could

Ok and? How do you think mirrors work in real life

Okay what the f-- that's really creative

I’m no game dev, but is there not an easier way to render a reflection like that? Seems like it’d be more trouble than it’s worth.

Neat

Just watched two hours of boundary breaking videos thanks

That moment you went through the rear view mirror...

If I remember right this engine was held together with bits of string

its such a cool trick.

Is this outside the ordinary? Mirrored models aren't really that uncommon or used to be pretty standard for smoke and mirrors. I think extra credit goes for them to warping the background to make it look like its actually a review mirror perspective. Maybe a bit overkill

The cool thing about doing it that way is it seems to maintain depth rather than just a 2d picture projected onto the mirror. Looking at mirrors in vr is always so jarring bc it looks more like a TV screen and less like an actual mirror with depth.

It worked, though, didn't it?

Fun fact: I played using free camera and discovered that the same thing happens in the fight on the farm, this time it's in the reflection of the water.

That's some out of the box thinking.

I always love seeing little details in games like this. Its like a theater stage but in 3D.

Where this clip comes from ??? Interesting asf

Well hats how it's done in every game before Raytracing. It was beautiful and cheap and didnt burn our graphics cards and money

Goofy looking, uses 1/10 of processing power compared to Ray tracing

If you think that's unusual, google Fallout 3 + train.

Cheating mirrors pre-Ray Tracing is endlessly fascinating to me. I remember the first time I noticed / thought about it was playing The Last of Us on release and hearing my poor PS3 fans spin up whenever I'd get near a bathroom mirror in-game.

No wonder he didn't see the zombie in the road!

I wonder what weird setups they have for tv shows and movies that are 3D animated.

@jaybee_tyn This why I love games. They're all essentially magic.

You CAN just do whatever so long as it works huh
