As for cold opens, they should drop the sting altogether. The Jodie Whittaker era did it well. Again, it just feels more modern' I really feel a clean edit can vastly improve overall production value, & sometimes Doctor Who's editing style feels a little stuck in the past (2/2)

the sting is a staple of doctor who openings/endings that shouldn’t be touched imo. it feels so satisfying to hear it come in after an exciting cliffhanger, also in cold opens it’s very effective (Lux was a good recent example) but it does sometimes make it feel rushed (The Well)

Not suggesting removing it altogether. I just think that it could be used more effectively. A simple cut to black and hold beforehand can really help to emphasise the final beat of the episode, rather than it feeling like a rush into the credits or next time trailer.

I never suggested completely removing it, but just using it differently. The way it was used in The Well was perfect. It let’s you sit with the emotion of what you just experienced, rather than rushing into the credits.

The stinger works for cliffhangers. Not for normal endings - so the cut to black works really well.

I'm an editor so this is my topic! Something I can speak on! It should cut to black sometimes. Colds should use it sometimes. Everything shud b completely situational. S9 did cliffhangers the best. Slam 'To Be Continued' is significantly more epic than the weird one we this era.

That’s fair, but as an editor myself, I also think there needs to be a level of consistency in a series. Every Breaking Bad ep, cliffhanger or not, ended with… cut to black, hold, fade in… ‘Executive Producer: Vince Gilligan’. It’s clean, consistent & dramatically effective.
