Why lie? 1) This was privately funded by Trump and some donors. 2) the entire white house isn't being torn down. A small fraction of the east wing is being demolished to expand an existing ball room so they can host bigger dinners/ events without having to sit in tents. 3) this is a normal occurrence among US presidents, as obama added a basketball court.

A quick google search will confirm the remodel will cost taxpayers ZERO dollars. And many presidents have remodeled the Whitehouse WITH tax dollars.
