The world needs more feel good stories like this ❤️

Love this. When I worked in a mall when I was young I noticed several elderly people would routinely come and sit alone and just watch people. One day I decided to introduce myself when I’d see them and even took my lunch break to chat with them many times. I’ll never forget the first man I approached. I started up a conversation after sitting beside him on a bench, and not two mins later he pulled out a small photo book from inside his jacket like he’d been waiting for this moment, and proceeded to show me his life story. He had a child living abroad and outlived everyone else. It was so sad and sweet and he was so happy to show them off. Especially images of his parents. After that I made many bonds and they’d all regularly stop in the store I worked at to say hi or drop off a small treat etc. one lady would always bring me discounted fruit that was often nearly rotten lol that she’d buy at the grocery stores discount to sell section. I learned quickly after a polite decline, that it was offensive to not accept her kindess from her humble means. I learned she had never watched a movie before but did have an old tv. I ended up giving her my VCR and old tapes, including one of the Titanic which became her favorite. BUT one day when I had her over for dinner for her birthday (she was the only elderly stranger friend I visited in her home and invited to mine) she started telling me how much she loved Titanic and talked me through the whole thing as though I’d never seen it… But she abruptly stopped about half way through after the car scene which she described as love making. When I realized she was done I asked why she stopped telling the story she was confused and said there is no more. It was at that point I realized lol she’d never put the second tape in the VHS since it was a longer movie and required two tapes. So she never even knew Jack died lol or the tragic ending. I didn’t dare tell her. She was so in love with the romance to it all 🤣 she would have died early. I actually did something very similar as a child too. I befriended 2 elderly people on my paper route and would visit tnem too. Maybe it’s because my own grandparents lived across the country, I’m not sure, but I loved them that way and was so sad when one got dementia and became too unsafe to visit anymore and the other who I nick named “Darling,”passed away.💜 Reading this story and reflecting on my past reminds me that I need to be on the look out even now that my life and responsibilities are much broader, for anyone who may be in similar situations.

Eleanor passed away in 2021 with cancer she found out a week before she died that she had cancer. The one thing about her is she had carried my brother to his cancer treatment that day. She was a great friend to him and to me. She had a big old heart. Thanks for sharing.

That’s a lovely story…. I wish things like this happened more often… definitely not what I was expecting…. So sad when the first thing i thought when you were setting up the story was something bad happened to someone here. Just wish it was the rule and not the exception 😢

As an Alabamian I can tell you this for a fact, black and white ppl get along very well in the rural south. Probably because everyone knows each other and each other’s family. There are racist on both sides but the majority of people are good people that treat others with respect
