McIntrye Wind Farm recently connected some of its turbines to the grid, those works are on hold as it investigates the incident.” “The 458MW Coopers Gap wind farm in south west Queensland, the newest and biggest wind project built to date in Australia – is to undergo major repairs after faults were found in its commissioning process. AGL, which operates the $850 million project and is a joint owner through the Powering Australia Renewables Fund, said in a statement that the blades of one of the 123 turbines will have to be replaced entirely, while GE Catcon is also going to replace “generators” – referring to the equipment in the nacelle at the top of the wind tower – in a further 50 turbines.” •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Not only are wind farms unreliable in terms of wind dependent generation. They break easily as we saw last week on the Darling Downs. If the blades on a wind farm can’t survive a summer storm on the Darling Downs they will be useless. This technology has me curious. It's called Wind Sail Propulsion. It's still in the 1.0 stages IMO. It's kind of interesting though and could potential save on fuel costs to get things across the ocean. It harnesses wind energy to assist or, in some cases, serve as the primary means of propelling ships. Another technology is the Flettner rotor, which uses the Magnus effect—created by spinning vertical cylinders in a wind stream—to generate forward thrust. Unlike sails, the rotor is powered by its own motor, allowing it to generate propulsion even when wind direction is unfavorable. Do you see potential for this kind of technology? What kinds of potential problems could arise? 🤨

I spent the afternoon at Otjimbele Grape Project— a project facilitated by the #NIPDB. The first grape farm in the north. Grapes have been sent to Windhoek for retail. The farm has 150 staff and grows asparagus (mainly for export), maize, wheat & watermelon. #InvestNamibia 🇳🇦

Batteries will never store enough energy to backup renewables. In Estimates I tried to get a straight answer on just how long the life of a battery is. Needless to say I couldn’t get one. They can currently (in optimal conditions) provide a small amount of energy for 2 to 4 hours. This of course isn’t long enough if the entire grid is to be powered by renewables. Longer term storage has to be provided by pumped hydro which requires the construction of enormous pumping stations powered by wind and solar. As shown by the Snowy Pumped Hydro, pumped hydro is not only ludicrously expensive, it is incredibly destructive to the environment. When pressed on just how much battery technology has improved, Matt Kean couldn’t give a straight answer. The fact is the cost of building enough batteries to back up the energy grid run by renewables is prohibitive and will never work. #auspol
