The world’s largest firework was launched over Nagaoka, Japan, on August 2, 2023, as part of the Nagaoka Festival Grand Fireworks. The firework had a diameter of 90 centimeters (35 inches) and weighed 300 kilograms (600 pounds), and it exploded into a 650-meter-diameter flower in the sky (710 yards). The Nagaoka Festival Grand Fireworks is one of the Three Great Fireworks Festivals of Japan, and it started as a memorial for the victims of the Nagaoka bombing in 1945. It also features various themed fireworks, such as the Fukkō Kigan Phoenix, which symbolizes the reconstruction and revitalization of the area after the Niigata Chūetsu Earthquake in 2004. The festival attracts nearly one million spectators every year.
