The world's largest fully electric container ship made its maiden trip this week. Everything will be electric except rockets but large container ships will.

Guys it's largely performative still - it supplements standard diesel drive with some electric drive, but sacrifices cargo and range to do so - so actual reduction in emissions for a given quantity of cargo transported X miles(useful journey), is pretty negligible.

Amazing, but i reckon there's a place for hydrogen powered ships too ...

That's not a large container ship, that would be the 400 meter class. Calculated the batteries needed to electrify one of those, basically the complete payload. Not straight forward. Either save energy (half the speed->1/10th consumption!) or recharge during trip.

Unlucky painting, though.

China is the world's largest importer of crude oil, but has huge renewable electricity production capacity. As of 2023, the average cost of electricity for residential users in China is around 0.56 to 0.62 RMB per kilowatt-hour (kWh), which translates to approximately $0.08 to $0.09 USD per kWh. For industrial consumers, the rates are usually lower, often ranging from 0.45 to 0.55 RMB per kWh (around $0.06 to $0.08 USD per kWh), -Chat GPT 4.o

Large container ships going electric, that's a huge step forward for sustainable transportation. Just wondering, what's the estimated reduction in greenhouse gas emissions?
