When you figure out the rule it's really not all the difficult to understand. But it took a comedy of errors by both teams for the rule to even be in play. In a nutshell. Because it was a fly ball with less than two outs it was a tag play for the runner at third. He left early. The runner at first left the base. The ball was thrown to 1st to double him up and end the inning. However the runner from 3rd had already crossed the plate. The only way the runner from 3rd could be called out was via an appeal at 3rd base from the Jays. But because they also thought there were two outs all the infielders left the field and their ability to appeal 3rd base went with them.
