Nollywood in the 90’s: THEY WON’T ACCEPT YOU BECAUSE YOU ARE A YORUBA PERSON !! Do you remember the days when Nollywood was dominated by the Igbos? The Igbos would blacklist Yoruba actors from appearing in their films. They exclusively offered roles to their fellow Igbos, and when Yoruba movie producers created their own films, the Igbos would pirate those movies, leaving Yoruba producers financially devastated while profiting immensely from their hard work. Many Yoruba movie producers ended up broke and destitute due to the Igbo piracy industry in Nigeria, which persisted for decades. Other African countries primarily watched Igbo Nollywood movies, as they only promoted their own. Despite this, the Yoruba movie industry continued to persevere, promoting their films conservatively to their Yoruba audience, which I believe is a key factor in their success today. They never complained or cried about marginalization by the Igbo Nollywood producers, unlike the Igbos who are expressing such grievances now. Yoruba movie producers remained dedicated to their craft and their audience. "Look at them today." However, I hope these Yoruba movie producers remember the past and what has brought them this far. It’s their conservative mindset that allowed them to realize how the Igbos sidelined them, finding comfort in their Yoruba identity as they focused on their craft. They should not pander to those who now want them to dim their light for others to shine. They must not sell their Yoruba identity, which has been instrumental in their success in the film industry, nor should they succumb to the gaslighting from these individuals. Stay true to your Yoruba identity and continue achieving great things. 🪬Nononsense
