If I’m not mistaken, that is Ben Riley on drums - super tight playing and swinging like a true mofo. Yes, that’s him. Last few seconds of clip. This video in black and white, was available for VHS rental where I lived in the 90s. “Monk in Norway” I believe is the title. Riley’s playing was so enlightening to me - it gave me a sort of meat potatoes salt pepper ethos - bass snare cymbal hi-hat. Learn to make a meal with that, or get out of the kitchen. I watched it over and over, I’m sure there were late fines. That, and seeing Monk’s foot sliding /tapping right on the beat! Mega eye-opening - it dispelled the myth (to me) that his playing was random. Clearly it was not - he just had a different sense of where notes should go. Amazing rhythm. And what a quartet!

So much to unpack here. It's been a really long time but I wish I could revisit what it was like hearing Monk for the first time.
