I saw this quote Governor Walz, said last year where he said that the First Amendment is not absolute, that it does not protect misinformation or disinformation, and he is legally wrong there, it does protect that. The First Amendment protects speech, true speech, and it protects lies. It protects good speech, and it protects bad speech. It protects all speech.” They didn't pass the First Amendment to protect speech that everybody likes. They passed it to protect the speech that's inconvenient, that's abhorrent, that nobody wants to hear, that's dangerous.” “Louis Brandeis said that the remedy for bad speech, the remedy for lies is not censorship, it's more speech. If we don't understand that, we will lose democracy for sure.”

The side that is restricting freedom of speech, had very strong censorship, very strong restrictions on speech. That's one of the signs that they are the bad guys. I asked Doc Rivers about why he’s been so willing to speak out on social issues, knowing that there are consequences: “I just think when things are morally wrong, it shouldn't be me; it should be everybody in this room. It should be everybody if you feel strongly about it. What we see on the streets right now, you cannot morally feel good about that. No American can, and that's why I speak out. And I do tell our guys there are consequences. You know, there was an Arthur Ashe, there was a Muhammad Ali, there was a Howard Cosell. They all spoke out, and some paid consequences for it. That's just part it.”

The point about free speech absolutism really matters. I genuinely think the only way we resolve terrible ideas is through better ideas. That can feel daunting in a world where people respond to disagreement with attacks. When attacks happen because you think people with different ideas are fascist or evil - or if someone like Charlie Kirk is assassinated, it creates a climate of fear. It becomes a world where people say words are violence, and therefore they feel entitled to do violence to you because your ideas are considered reprehensible, because you are not seen as a fellow citizen and human but as something evil. It is frightening, but that is exactly when courage is needed. Free speech absolutism gives us the only real tool we have, which is faith, whether secular or religious, in our fellow citizens. Faith that the power of good ideas and the illumination they bring can act as an antiseptic against bad ideas. Sometimes we will lose. But the alternative is far worse. The flip side is absolute barbarism, a descent into violence and dehumanisation, in what should be a shared quest for civilisation over barbarism.
