As someone who was responsible for environmental compliance for a medium-sized industrial facility inventing and making fuels, propellants and explosives, I find it extremely unlikely that unregulated discharges are happening as this post alleges...pretty hard to do these days given equipment and personnel on and off the site. Not impossible, but very unlikely...serious penalties abound, and loss of goodwill can be devastating.

Jesus. It’s cooling water. The inside loop cools the actual data center. Then that hot water is sent through cooling coils to transfer heat to an outside cooling loop. There isn’t some magical transfer of carcinogenic life ending chemicals in the process. There’s only thing transferred is HEAT!!!! It’s fucking WATER that’s hot transferring heat to water that is cold. All along the way there is a careful analysis of chemistry to make sure no buildup of deposits will occur in the heat transfer apparatus.

I managed small scale data centers for years with closed looped cooling systems.The chemicals used in the water treatment are no worse than pool chemicals. It's just to prevent algae etc ..... I'm no fan of the data centers, but this is just panic porn.

Bullshit, the water has ethylene glycol and is treated / filtered during the annual maintenance. They also use strong UV lights that the water runs by to kill any live contaminants. These fucking frauds make this shit up.

Nearly every single vehicle in America has a closed loop cooling system and radiator filled with chemicals, such as coolant/antifreeze and water. In 2022 there were about 279 Million vehicles with 98.6 Million of them being cars. Those cars are often flushed out too.

I've worked on these systems all my life. They USE a lot of water in the evaporative process, which is what I am against. As far as chemicals go, we used to have the old glycol systems which is basically anti freeze, and those are a "closed loop" system as described. But we no longer use those, and the water that is being discharged is just a back flushing of the water lines and coils. It is very much like any geothermal system out today. Where we run into problems is the chemicals added during the flushing process to reduce rust and hard water deposits that build up. Most of those are now " environmentally friendly". Every major AC manufacturer makes all electric commercial PACKAGE units that use normal refrigerant just like home units do. They come in a variety of sizes in the 10's of tons worth of cooling. That's what should be used for this. The reason everyone wants to do these cooling towers is because they are cheap to install, cheap to run, and water is cheaper than electricity and refrigerant package units. So it is about money and convenience. They can build smaller power plants to run these centers. They should be building power plants that are DOUBLE their needs, run all electric AC units, and put the rest of the power into the local grid. More up front costs, but will pay for itself 100x over in the course of its life. That's my 2 cents, for whatever its worth.

Wow. The ignorance people swallow whole. As someone who has filled and flushed a AI data center cooling system, it was far from what is being said. All water that is taken from system is hauled and disposed of properly and not to a storm or sanitary system.

I have personally worked in a data center during construction and the water is recirculated. It’s not pumped out anywhere it’s recirculated back into the building.

I don't believe this. Properly disposing of the mixture is not that big of a deal and i cant imagine many datacenters would risk that lawsuit and shut down over it. Democrat owned in democrat state maybe though.

Closed loops get treatment to prevent biofilm and bacteria from growing. They usually dont get flushed once in operation. You dont want to keep adding oxygenated water back into they system.

All those data centers are using so much water because they all have Small Modular Reactors in them, and when all that water is discharged back into the system, it's full of strontium (within "safe" FDA limits, of course).
