There is a severe geomagnetic storm warning this weekend, and it means you might be able to see the Northern Lights in parts of the UK on Friday Night. Catherine Regan, a planetary scientist at the Mullard Space Science Laboratory, tells #bbcpm how to see the aurora at home.

The first of many timelapses from Thusday night - in this video you can see the aurora appears immediately after sunset, a sign that activity was strong! The colors from this G4 "severe" geomagnetic storm were unreal. I swear I saw the entire rainbow that night in the aurora. This was by far the best auroral display I have seen in my entire life, and I have seen hundreds. I am so exctited to see what solar cycle 25 maximum has in store and all the great auroral displays that are yet to come. Dr. Tamitha Skov #aurora #northernlights #space Storyful Viral ViralHog

Here’s your space weather report for the week of May 15 - 21: • 4 M-class flares • 3 C-class flares • 35 coronal mass ejections • 1 geomagnetic storm This video from NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) shows the week’s activity. It was a fairly calm week on the Sun. A coronal mass ejection last week reached Earth on May 15, triggering a minor geomagnetic storm and leading to aurora sightings across the northern U.S. On May 20, SDO's Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) paused normal science operations for a series of routine calibration maneuvers — measurements that keep the instrument's magnetic field and Doppler velocity data scientifically accurate.
