Thinking that modern places have any continuity with their ancient counterparts is a mistake. Rome, Athens, etc are not ancient cities, they’re modern cities (with God-awful urbanism) plopped on top of the ruins of an ancient city. If Rome and Athens were not what they are, we would consider them urban disasters near the level of Cairo or Tehran.
