The “olodo uprising” that Ycee is speaking about, along with the ongoing debate around Peller culture, is truly a pandemic threatening the productivity of this country. This doesn’t mean he is insulting Peller; rather, he is using him as a classic example. He wasn’t simply talking about going to school, because you can attend school and still be an olodo I’ve seen them, I’ve shared classrooms with them. He is speaking about so many deeper issues. There are far too many people we’ve handed microphones to who have no business speaking to the public. We are now a country comparing Wole Soyinka with GehGeh and asking who is wiser. This is how low we have fallen. A lot of average people holding microphones and doing podcast analysis have no business being there, yet we have glorified their ignorance and made them feel intelligent. This is the level of mediocrity we’ve reached. I see influencers arguing about underpaid doctors while comparing them to TikTokers. Until we understand that it wasn’t an olodo who built that app and is making billions, we will continue to downgrade academic excellence. If BBN Naija gives its winner ₦100 million while a top student in school gets only ₦10,000, that is not a fair or intelligent comparison. BBN is a business and an advertising platform, it’s a completely different and flawed analogy. We have seen Tony Elumelu and many others actively rewarding academic excellence. There are thousands of academic grants out there worth thousands of dollars, but because we have more olodos, they don’t know about them. There is actually more reward for academic excellence than many realise it’s just not for merely finishing school. Finishing school and actually being intelligent are two very different things. The level of anti-intellectualism in Nigeria is dangerously high. As a nation of over 200 million people, if we remain largely unproductive, we will crash. We are not producing anything meaningful, and that is a recipe for national collapse.
