The complexities of these issues run deeper than we might understand. Across various cultures, traditional gender roles typically cast men as providers, protectors, and leaders of households. Such norms may perpetuate a sense of entitlement and dominance, resulting in the unequal treatment of women, for example. These episodes of unrealistic behaviour have impacted all communities equally. During these challenging times, I have been offering support to friends, colleagues, and family (mainly women). Upon reflection, it becomes clear that certain aspects of gender dynamics have persisted throughout societies for thousands of years (millennia), despite the passage of time. Historically, riots have often been a manifestation of the quest for justice and change. Riots can be sparked by specific events or incidents, or trigger events, as we put it. These may include social, political, or economic factors such as a controversial decision, an act of violence, or a perceived injustice, which ignite tensions and lead to widespread unrest. Furthermore, during riots, certain individuals might take advantage of the chaos for personal gain or to advance their own agendas. Lawbreakers can intensify tensions through violence, looting, or incitement. It is crucial to distinguish between peaceful protesters and those who aim for chaos. In today’s interconnected world, social media significantly impacts our perception. A solitary incident can swiftly capture attention and heighten emotions. Misinformation, rumors, and provocative content can spread quickly, stoking unrest. Agitators might use this milieu to further escalate tensions. Beyond immediate triggers, enduring structural issues like inequality, discrimination, and limited opportunities also fuel social unrest. Addressing these systemic problems is essential for long-term stability. Just like a good father’s protective instincts, the concept of selflessness and sacrifice drives a father to take extraordinary measures to ensure the safety and wellbeing of his family. Whether shielding them from danger, providing emotional support, or making sacrifices, this deep bond exemplifies the strength of family ties. Flipping the coin allows us to see both sides and providing support through active listening also helps communities of all colours. It is about promoting unity and recognising shared humanity. Note: What we witnessed is not limited to any specific ethnicity or nationality. These dynamics exist worldwide. Men of various backgrounds can exhibit similar behaviours, influenced by cultural norms and upbringing. Women can exhibit a wide range of behaviours, just like men. While societal norms often shape gender-specific expectations, individual personalities and experiences play a significant role. It is essential to recognise that both men and women can display positive or negative traits, regardless of their gender. The roots of these societal issues run deep, spanning centuries and cultures. Throughout history, gender norms, stereotypes, and power dynamics have shaped how men and women interact. While progress has been made, there is still much work to do. By engaging in thoughtful conversations and advocating for change, just like you did, we contribute to a more equitable future. I also agree that peace is the path to follow. 🕊️
