Thermite, a mixture of aluminum powder and iron oxide (powdered rust basically) or other metal oxide is known for its intense heat, used in railroad cutting and welding for example. Although most compounds are not explosive, thermite can be used to create a heat source in a controlled or uncontrolled manner. Due to the drastic reactivity difference between the atoms, when uncontrolled it can reach temperatures of over 4500°F. Magnetite with powdered aluminum or very fine shreds at a mixture ratio of 3.22 : 1 also makes an intense thermite that will burn at thousands of degrees and leave behind very pure iron slag after combustion completes. It can be ignited with magnesium, a sparkler, or a road flare. Reminded me that I long ago invented a way to become an artifact. It starts with 150 pounds of iron oxide (rust/magnetite mixture) and 150 pounds of aluminum shreds. A dehydrated corpse and this mixture placed in a deep hole in the ground. The resulting pure iron slag is made into a steel item
