There is no functional and non-functional strength — strength is, by definition, functional, and the strength developed through dedicated bodybuilding training can be applied to any strenuous task. Physiologically, the only way to significantly increase a muscle's strength is to make it bigger. Especially when natural lifters are concerned, hypertrophy IS strength.
