Not compulsory but mandatory. He was careful to say it wasn't compulsory, but people were coerced when it was made mandatory. So when he said they made their own choices: "Coercion is understood as either having no choice or as having no acceptable choice".

Sure I had a choice, but I couldn't go to launch days at work with everyone else. I had to eat outside the mall instead of the foodcourt, couldn't go to restaurants, bakeries and cafes, couldn't get my hair cut, got separated from everyone at work and abused by fiends & family
