Antiochus I built a fifty meter high artificial peak out of loose crushed rock at the summit of Mount Nemrut to hide his tomb. Modern archaeologists still cannot reach the burial chamber because the stones instantly collapse inward during any excavation attempt. The sheer effort required to create a self sealing mountain makes you wonder what exactly he was trying to protect.

🏛🇮🇷 Chogha Zanbil is an ancient Elamite complex in the Khuzestan province of Iran. It is one of the few existing ziggurats outside Mesopotamia. The construction date of the city is unclear due to uncertainty in the chronology of the reign of Untash-Napirisha but is clearly sometime in the 14th or 13th century BC. The conventionally assumed date is 1250 BC. The city is currently believed to have been destroyed by the Neo-Assyrian ruler Assurbanipal in about 645 BC, along with the Elamite capital of Susa though some researchers place the end of occupation in the late 12th century BC. The ziggurat is considered to be the best preserved example of the stepped pyramidal monument by UNESCO.

From a distance, it looks like any other peak in the eastern Taurus range — until the colossal heads come into view. They sit in a solemn line near the summit: great stone faces, their features softened by centuries of earthquakes, frost and sun. Far below, goats pick their way through dry grass while the wind blows across the landscape. It’s hard to know what’s more surprising: encountering these giant heads near the summit of one of southeast Turkey’s tallest mountains, or the fact that anyone believed these would last forever. But that was King Antiochus’s dream — to build a mountain where he could sit among deities, his power carved in stone and locked in an eternal staring contest with the horizon. Antiochus I ruled a state called Commagene that briefly flourished 2,000 years ago in a region north of Syria and the Euphrates River after the breakup of Alexander the Great’s empire. It was a place where Greek, Persian, Assyrian and Armenian traditions collided. Hoping to hold sway over the region even after death, Antiochus had his tomb constructed on Nemrut, flanked by stone figures representing the unique collage of mythologies that swirled around his kingdom. Antiochus himself was seated among them, rubbing shoulders with immortality. Time and nature had other ideas. Getting to the top of Nemrut is relatively straightforward. Visitors can hike, but there’s also a road leading most of the way, accessible by car or with a guided tour. Along the way, goats and cows grazing by the roadside create pastoral scenes that have likely changed little over the centuries. Further uphill, Septimius Severus Bridge — a Roman engineering marvel — still spans the Cendere River, while the Karakuş Tumulus commemorates female members of the Commagene royal family, offering a rare glimpse into the kingdom’s daily and ceremonial life. We’re in the City of David, the historical core of ancient Jerusalem, located just south of the Temple Mount. It was here that King David established his capital after capturing the city from the Jebusites around 1000 BC, making it the political and spiritual center of the Israelite kingdom. The road we’re on is a current archaeological site underneath existing homes, and wasn’t even discovered until 2004. It was a vital route for Jewish pilgrims during the Second Temple period (circa 1st century BC—1st century AD), particularly for those participating in festivals like Passover, Shavuot, and Sukkot, when they would ritually purify themselves at the Pool of Siloam before ascending to the Temple. The so called "Tomb of Hector", reputed to belong to Hector, a Trojan hero from the Iliad; located in Cadianda, Üzümlü, Türkiye 🇹🇷. It is beginning to slide down hillside due to earthquakes.... Ophryneion or Ophrynium was an ancient Greek city in northern Troad region of Anatolia, Türkiye. The city was situated on the steep brow of a hill overlooking the Dardanelles, hence the origin of its Ancient Greek name ὀφρῦς (ophrus), meaning 'brow of a hill', 'crag'. Ophryneion was supposedly one of a series of cities founded by Akamas, son of Theseus which he subsequently passed off as being founded by Ascanius and Skamandrios, sons of Aeneas and of Hector respectively. This story was taken from 2nd Century BC, scholar Lysimachus of Alexandria, who related it in Book 2 of his Nostoi, who in turn derived it from a late 4th Century BC, historian known as Dionysios of Chalkis. It has been argued that this tradition reflects a pro-Athenian bias, as it makes the founder of many places in Troad the son of Athens' most important hero, Theseus, while at the same time explaining away the fact that contemporary traditions made no mention of such a connection. By contrast with story of Ophryneion being founded by Akamas, which puts the city's origins in the period immediately following destruction of Troy, surface surveys conducted on the site suggest that it was occupied no earlier than 6th Century BC. In antiquity, Ophryneion was considered to be site of tomb of Hector, famous Trojan hero killed by Achilles in Homer's Iliad. It is possible that a lost play of 5th Century BC tragedian Sophocles referred to this tradition, and it likewise appears to be referred to on a vase from 500–490 BC depicting sack of Troy. However, first secure reference to this tradition appears on the coinage of Ophryneion, 350–300 BC, which depicted Hector. After city of Thebes was rebuilt in 316 BC (it had been destroyed by Alexander the Great in 335 BC), bones of Hector were moved from Ophryneion to Thebes in accordance with an oracle which promised Thebes prosperity should this happen. In early 1st Century AD, geographer Strabo described there being a sacred precinct of Hector near Oryphneion in a conspicuous spot, but scholars have been unable to identify it. Ophryneion is rarely mentioned in extant sources from Antiquity. Herodotus mentions that in 480 BC, Xerxes passed by his way up coast before crossing to Europe at nearby Abydos. Later that century, it was one of Actaean cities which Mytilene lost control of following the end of the Mytilenean revolt in 427 BC. An inscription from Athens dating to 414/413 BC which records property confiscated from Athenian nobleman implicated in mutilation of Herms, indicates that a relative of Alcibiades, Axiochus, earned revenues from land in the territory of Ophryneion. In summer of 399 BC, Xenophon stopped here to offer sacrifice while marching home with 10,000. Later in 4th Century BC, a speech of orator Demosthenes relates how a man who had been exiled from Byzantium, Parmeno, had decided to settle at Ophryneion, but was forced to move when an earthquake struck Chersonese and brought down his house, presumably causing similar damage in rest of town. Some time shortly after 316 BC, bones of Hector were moved from Ophryneion to Thebes, although Strabo's description of Hector's precinct at Ophryneion in 1st Century AD suggests that he was still worshipped there after his bones had moved. Strabo indicates that before Treaty of Apamea in 188 BC, Ophryneion had been under sway of Dardanus to north-east, whereas after this point it instead belonged to Ilium. Some time shortly after 316 BC, bones of Hector were moved from Ophryneion to Thebes, although Strabo's description of Hector's precinct at Ophryneion in 1st Century AD suggests that he was still worshipped there after his bones had moved. Strabo indicates that before Treaty of Apamea in 188 BC, Ophryneion had been under sway of Dardanus to north-east, whereas after this point it instead belonged to Ilium. The so called "Tomb of Hector", reputed to belong to Hector, a Trojan hero from the Iliad; located in Cadianda, Üzümlü, Türkiye. It is beginning to slide down hillside due to earthquakes... Ophryneion or Ophrynium was an ancient Greek city in northern Troad region of Anatolia, Türkiye. The city was situated on the steep brow of a hill overlooking the Dardanelles, hence the origin of its Ancient Greek name ὀφρῦς (ophrus), meaning 'brow of a hill', 'crag'. Ophryneion was supposedly one of a series of cities founded by Akamas, son of Theseus which he subsequently passed off as being founded by Ascanius and Skamandrios, sons of Aeneas and of Hector respectively. This story was taken from 2nd Century BC, scholar Lysimachus of Alexandria, who related it in Book 2 of his Nostoi, who in turn derived it from a late 4th Century BC, historian known as Dionysios of Chalkis. It has been argued that this tradition reflects a pro-Athenian bias, as it makes the founder of many places in Troad the son of Athens' most important hero, Theseus, while at the same time explaining away the fact that contemporary traditions made no mention of such a connection. By contrast with story of Ophryneion being founded by Akamas, which puts the city's origins in the period immediately following destruction of Troy, surface surveys conducted on the site suggest that it was occupied no earlier than 6th Century BC. In antiquity, Ophryneion was considered to be site of tomb of Hector, famous Trojan hero killed by Achilles in Homer's Iliad. It is possible that a lost play of 5th Century BC tragedian Sophocles referred to this tradition, and it likewise appears to be referred to on a vase from 500–490 BC depicting sack of Troy. However, first secure reference to this tradition appears on the coinage of Ophryneion, 350–300 BC, which depicted Hector. After city of Thebes was rebuilt in 316 BC (it had been destroyed by Alexander the Great in 335 BC), bones of Hector were moved from Ophryneion to Thebes in accordance with an oracle which promised Thebes prosperity should this happen. In early 1st Century AD, geographer Strabo described there being a sacred precinct of Hector near Oryphneion in a conspicuous spot, but scholars have been unable to identify it. Ophryneion is rarely mentioned in extant sources from Antiquity. Herodotus mentions that in 480 BC, Xerxes passed by his way up coast before crossing to Europe at nearby Abydos. Later that century, it was one of Actaean cities which Mytilene lost control of following the end of the Mytilenean revolt in 427 BC. An inscription from Athens dating to 414/413 BC which records property confiscated from Athenian nobleman implicated in mutilation of Herms, indicates that a relative of Alcibiades, Axiochus, earned revenues from land in the territory of Ophryneion. In summer of 399 BC, Xenophon stopped here to offer sacrifice while marching home with 10,000. Acropolis Theater of Pergamon in Bergama - Türkiye 🇹🇷 The first traces of Greek Theatre of Pergamon, situated on west side of castle hill, can be dated back to early 5th Century BC. Today dominating cavea was built in late 5th Century BC. Spectators had access to their seats via theatre terrace. Current theatre was built in mid 3rd Century BC, at the beginning of Attalid dynasty and renovated extensively by King Eumenes II (r. 197-159 BC). Theatre is said to have had seating capacity of 10,000 and the cavea (seating area) was steepest in the ancient world. The 80 rows of seats were arranged on three levels, divided by 3 walkways (diazomata) around width of cavea. At the front of second row in centre of cavea are remains of royal box. The orchestra (performance area) was on 246.5m long, 17.4m wide colonnaded terrace along the front of the theatre. The stage itself was a wooden construction which could be removed when not in use, in order to clear the terrace and the approach to Temple of Dionysus at its north end. Today, all that remains of monumental terrace is a footpath, along which lie some of fragments of stoa (colonnade). Due to limitations of steep hillside site, cavea could not be built wider than a semi-circle as in other Greek theatres, however it was extended upwards to 37m above the orchestra. Standing at the top, looking over Selinus valley can be quite dizzying, and visitors should watch their step. The stage house consisted entirely of wood and was only erected and dismantled during seasons. This construction method was retained until change from 2nd-1st Century BC, as a marble stage house would have permanently obstructed the theatre terrace. To accommodate the supporting beams, recesses called "quivers" were made in floor. These are numerously verifiable and can be assigned to different construction phases. For square inlet holes still visible today, there were capstones with which a smooth continuous terrace could be restored after the stage had been dismantled. The hill of Pergamon Acropolis and many other nearby hills consist of this purplish-red, igneous, volcanic rock. Since it was in plentiful supply, it was used extensively for building in and around the city. However, it is not suitable for large building projects because, although it can bear a lot of weight, it breaks relatively easily, which is not an ideal quality in such a highly earthquake-prone area. Stones used for building walls had to be cut quite small, as can be seen in stone blocks immediately to left of millstone. At the end of 3rd Century BC, Pergamon took control of island of Proconnesos (today Marmara), and its marble quarries became royal property. Proconnesian marble was used thereafter in great quantites for building and sculpture in city. In Roman times quarries belonged to emperors. Since, the late 18th Century AD, architects and scholars, including William Martin Leake, have attempted to estimate the seating areas and audience capacities of ancient theatres using mathematical formulae and other methods.
