As we enter July, models anticipate the Atlantic to remain generally quiet hurricane-wise. El Niño is dominating the current and forecast conditions in the tropical Atlantic, manifesting as high shear in the Caribbean and less thunderstorm activity than normal. By contrast, the eastern Pacific is expected to spring to life, supported by the El Niño background state. Watch the continuous cyclone activity (orange blobs) in this 35-day GEFS forecast, versus the rather docile Atlantic. We can't guarantee no Atlantic storms in July, especially with the always-present risk of so-called "home grown" development along old cold fronts that drape across the SW Atlantic and Gulf region. But things seem likely to stay in check for a while.

It’s quiet - now - as we head into peak season, but that may change soon. The Atlantic has been under large scale sinking, crushing tropical development. But rising air from the Pacific is rounding the bend, and heading into the Atlantic in the coming weeks. That will cause favorable conditions for hurricanes to develop especially by mid September, but there’s a wave moving off Africa right now with a good chance of development later this week/weekend. The hope is that strong cold fronts in the US will block these Atlantic storms from reaching the US. Stay tuned. (Hurricane pictured is merely an illustration, not a real storm) #fyp # hurricane

The Arctic flood gates are opening up, as a strong & warm (relatively) block grows over Greenland. That warmth will shove the frigid Polar Vortex south, with multiple cold plunges in the batters box for the next 10-15 days in the Midwest, Great Lakes, Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. The chilly air will visit the Deep South and #Florida periodically too.
