These are EPMs, the electromagnet’s better relative that nobody’s ever heard of. They require ridiculously little power to operate and can stay on or off EVEN WITHOUT POWER. Here are 3 simultaneously powered by only 2 camera batteries, capable of lifting up to 80lb/36kg… each.

Pretty sick and simple technique!

Would have been helpful to tell us what EPM stands for. Until youbdo, I will believe it's European Peace Minister.

THESE WILL BE PLACED UNDER MY FEET AS I WALK UNDER MY SPACE SHIP

Actually, you are doing the lifting, they are just holding.

🤣 This is my favorite “actually” in a while.

Trying to keep it "light"... 😆

Ohh use those for spacewalk boots. Like in the expanse.

Take all my money

I miss screwing around with EPMs.

That could be pretty useful for EVA around Starship

They have used these for years in machine tooling.

More complex version of Ed Leedskalnin's Permanent Magnet Holder. You should look him up and what he did at Coral Castle by himself.

The engage and disengage sound is sick

For how long can youlift 80lb with two lithium 1/2 AA cell?

My arms might get tired first, but until the end of the universe.

Wait, this is sick! I need to play with this technology!

Electro-Permanent Magnet? Tell us more

@sendcutsend could be handy around the shop. jk

Awsome stuff. Funny to see how people still think that you need electricity to keep electromagnet attached to the metal surface. It can be locked in place indefinately. Plus you get some elctricity back back when it is released. Old stuff.

@grok break down the tech

@AshtonForbes

@steveMmattison Cool

That ain't 80lbs and there's 3 of them, so each one is lifting about 5 lbs

Wait.. Thats an interesting capability...

I've seen one before, I think they were for shops. Strong as heck, I thought there was a watch battery stuck in it or something.

How do I make these at home

and goes on not to do the right test. Pffff...fake ass.

I see where you’re coming from. I thought about doing a single magnet 80lb lift in this video, but that’s more complicated than it sounds. I’d have to make a holder for just 1 that keeps forces perfectly perpendicular (like a gimbal), use a lapping plate to flatten the magnet, then make a weight holder with a piece of hyperco (a highly permeable magnetic material). Set up a tripod and lights. Then I’d have to splice the footage together. I’m not trying to lie to you, I’m just lazy. There’s some data on the internet you can go find. But anyway, here’s a more advanced EPM that’s half the size lifting 90lbs (I think) from a few years ago at my old job. Unfortunately, I don’t own any of these.

@BrianRoemmele

wait...wut?

👍

whats the brand?

These were made by Nicadrone

EDWARD LEEDSKALNIN. CORAL CASTLE. "PERMANENT" MAGNET.
