These are the rare "interstate-induced clouds" that formed over Houston's highways on Tuesday morning, wowing meteorologists. As roads warmed faster than the surrounding land after sunrise, very humid air above them rose, cooled and quickly condensed into rows of cumulus clouds.

This group of soldiers was jumping out of a military aircraft with the door wide open high above the ground. They were stepping off the ramp one by one into freefall with their parachutes ready while the rest of the team watched from inside. They look completely calm and professional as they leap out over the clouds and countryside below. I give them props for making it look so easy up there, would you ever jump out of a plane like that?

Approaching Neptune🔵 This video consists of raw images from Voyager 2, which flew by the planet in August 1989. While studying these images of the surface, scientists discovered Neptune's Great Dark Spot and Little Dark Spot. Several years later, the dark spots discovered by the probe disappeared, but new ones appeared in their place. The spots on Neptune are storm vortices in the atmosphere. They are also known as anticyclones. They are accompanied by bright, light companion clouds that form when disturbed atmospheric currents rise above the vortex. These vortices vary greatly. They have different shapes, sizes, stability, and other parameters. Near such objects, wind speeds can reach 2,400 km/h. That's even faster than the speed of sound!

From International Space Station, we have a unique vantage point to observe lightning storms from directly above them. Much like from the ground, they appear as rapid, intense flashes that are over as quickly as they started. But, with the help of handheld cameras and a bit of practice (and, admittedly, some luck), we can capture these intense flashes with a very high frame rate then slow them down to see how the lightning propagates. It's lightning, in slow motion. This is one that occurred over Indonesia on 6/28. I shot it for a half second at 1/120 frame rate, so, 60 separate frames. I then compiled those frames into two videos: the first, in real-time, and the second, slowed down so that each frame is a half second to highlight the progression of the flash. Note the incredible burst of light in one frame, which includes what is likely a TLE on the upper left. A TLE, or Transient Luminous Event, is an electrical discharge that happens in the upper atmosphere above lightning storms (if you haven’t seen Ferry Farhan TLE photo from last week, head over to her page). As their name implies, these are transient, or short lived, phenomena – it appeared in only one frame of the sequence, lasting for no more than 1/120th of a second. The last photo is that single frame. Absolutely incredible.

A Himalayan mountain began collapsing from more than 5,000 meters above sea level. Seven minutes later, the catastrophe reached the valley below, Port Gyirong. This moment that should have been almost impossible to capture was caught on camera by a Chinese photographer active in Xizang and Xinjiang. His name is Heimu (黑沐). Just before the disaster, he happened to be climbing nearby, and in doing so, captured the very beginning of the catastrophe. According to his eyewitness account, it was not the entire glacier that moved first. The rock gave way first and the slope smoked. As the mountainside destabilized, it began tearing into the glacier above. Then ice, rock and debris poured together into the valley below. But what is truly chilling is the combination of height and time. The initial collapse occurred above 5,000 meters. Gyirong Port, by comparison, sits at only 1,800 meters above sea level. In other words, over a very short horizontal distance, the mass plunged through a vertical drop of more than 3,000 meters. And it covered that distance in only seven minutes. Rock, ice and mud accelerated under gravity, picking up more debris and water as they surged downhill. That may also explain why roads, buildings, bridges and parking areas that had been intact only minutes earlier were almost completely wiped from the landscape.

This sight was worth getting out of bed early. Just over four years ago, Comet C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) rose before dawn to the delight of northern sky enthusiasts awake that early. Up before sunrise on July 8th, the featured photographer was able to capture in dramatic fashion one of the few comets visible to the unaided eye this century, an inner-Solar System intruder that has become known as the Great Comet of 2020. The resulting video detailed Comet NEOWISE from Italy rising over the Adriatic Sea. The featured time-lapse video combines over 240 images taken over 30 minutes. The comet was seen rising through a foreground of bright and undulating noctilucent clouds, and before a background of distant stars. Comet NEOWISE remained unexpectedly bright for over a month, with its ion and dust tails found to emanate from a nucleus spanning about five kilometers across. You can swim in the winter or summer. 1) Pool is always built on lowest floor inside (generally basement structure) 2) Concrete block wall for basement with very little wood frame 3) Densglass (kind of like a moisture resistant drywall) attached to concrete block 4) Special stucco just like you see on exterior of homes sprayed onto Densglass. The stucco is dyed to color of my choice. 5) Industrial grade dehumidifier (I use Santa Fe or Watchdog Brand). The humidity pulled from air is pumped back into the pool system near the mechanical room or outside. 6) Mini split for the pool room. Main floor HVAC covers the sleeping rooms, bathroom of basement and is always separated from pool room. You don’t want chlorinated air running through a main HVAC system. I look at having to replace the minisplit & dehumidifier about every 4 to 5 yrs because of the chlorinated air that goes through them. 7) Exhaust Fan leading to exterior which also pulls humid air out of the room as a supplemental support for the dehumidifier. When overhead lights are turned on, we have it so the exhaust fan kicks on as well. That’s it. We create a “bubble”, where no moisture gets into the other areas of home and the humid air gets pulled from the pool room.
