Confused about the upcoming GP strike? Watch this from Dr Steve Taylor - give him a follow too 👍 ➡️ There aren't enough GPs ➡️ Since 2015 we've lost 2,000 GPs ➡️ Funding since 2015 has reduced 10-12% ➡️ More people, fewer GPs ▶️ This is a problem the Tory gov have made ◀️ ➡️ In 2015, Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt said there would be 5,000 more GPs in 2020. There weren't ➡️ In 2019 Health Secretary Matt Hancock said there would be 6,000 more GPs by now. There aren't ➡️ The current Tory government (video was filmed in June 2024) said there are 2,000 more GPs. That's not true. There are 2,000 less So the Conservative government kept saying they'd hire more GPs, they didn't. On top of this the new GP contract means that GP practices are underfunded. This is how the Conservative government destroyed NHS dentistry, and they've tried to destroy NHS GP practices as well I don't envy Labour needing to find a way to fix this, but if Labour don't address the GP crisis amongst the wider NHS crisis, healthcare in our country will diminish even further and the cost of fixing problems cause by problems caused by a lack of healthcare will be even more costly

Doctors need training jobs to qualify as Consultants and GPs; but the Government has capped the available number, creating a bottleneck that leaves doctors unemployed and patients waiting longer. This year there were 30,000 doctors applying for 10,000 NHS training posts. That’s the scale of the crisis Westminster won’t talk about. With no credible solution from Wes Streeting, this jobs crisis is one of the reasons Resident Doctors will be striking from the 17th of December. Patients need doctors. Doctors need jobs. The Government needs to act.

Wes Streeting said he’s responsible for long ambulance waits and the lack of GP appointments. What he failed to mention is that he is also responsible for 20,000 NHS doctors potentially being out of a speciality training job this August and being unable to become consultants/GPs. This is because training posts are being centrally restricted by the government. Wes Streeting says he wants to increase efficiency, yet we have UK doctors out of work. This is a waste of taxpayers money. Why is the government not addressing this?

While you wait weeks to see a GP, NHS doctors in England are being forced into unemployment; blocked by Government caps that stop them from furthering their training to become specialist Consultants/GPs. This year, there were around 30,000 doctors applying for 10,000 speciality training places. That means thousands of capable doctors ready to serve the public and the NHS are being turned away. Every rejected doctor is a lost opportunity to cut waiting lists, staff wards safely and bring the NHS back from crisis. And Wes Streeting’s response? Just 2,000 extra speciality training places over 3 years. That will not fix the doctor unemployment crisis in England. It will continue to leave patients waiting months for care and will push doctors out of the NHS altogether. This is one of the reasons why NHS resident doctors are going back out on strike. Doctors want to work. Patients want care. It’s the Government that’s standing in the way. #EndTrainingCrisis
