Demystifying IFRS 17 Insurance contract One of the IFRS standards that is too dear to me is IFRS 17. While it’s an accounting standard, it has a strong intersection with actuarial work and in many cases you see accountants in the insurance industry shy away from it and let the actuarial team take the lead (more reason I’ve been preaching that accountants who like complexity should explore actuarial exams… lol 😄). Unlike the old IFRS 4 where actuarial numbers were often treated as “just a liability figure,” IFRS 17 now has a very pervasive impact on the face of the accounts, from revenue to expenses to finance income/expense, etc. It’s also quite specialised such that if you’re not involved in insurance industry (or insurance-like contracts), you may never really experience it. And honestly, it’s difficult to learn purely in theory because it’s well loaded. practical application is what makes it click. That said, I still believe anyone can get a solid gist with the right explanation. I’ve supported 40+ insurance & reinsurance entities across Africa on IFRS 17 implementation and delivered 50+ trainings for boards, practitioners, and regulators. Someone dear to me recently asked that I explain the standard, so I put something together to share (recorded this yesterday night from about 8pm–1am, even sacrificed my Chelsea game as I was so sure its a straight win 😅). For years, I’ve exposed hidden hunger, challenged unjust tariffs, and called for policies to lower food prices and support our small farmers. Our tariff and permit system restricts competition, enriches the big players, and leaves small farmers poor, workers underpaid, and families burdened with high prices. We are told these policies protect local industry, but in truth they protect profits and minimize competition. Jamaica imposes a 260% duty on chicken - the highest in our region. Plus, Mexico has suspended its tariffs, while Panama, Costa Rica, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Nicaragua keep theirs at just 15–40%. This outdated system punishes families and fails to build real production capacity. Gabbit Robotics co-founder Nicole Mattero on why the next AI winners won't fight over your screen, they'll fight to get closer to you: She kicks things off with what she admits is a hot take: "My hot take is that hardware is the only moat going forward because anyone's going to be able to spin up a model and make it really good and really cheap." Her logic is simple. Once a strong model is cheap and easy for anyone to build, the model alone can't set you apart. So what actually protects you? "Where does that leave you? Basically companies that have tactile modes such as hardware are the only ones that actually survive." Hardware, though, is only one piece of her argument. The second piece is data: "The models that win in the long run are the ones where private data is their [moat]." From there, Mattero ties the two together. Hardware gives a company one moat. The ability to gather unique personal data gives it another. Is customer really a king or a slave? Heard my colleagues speak about the long queues at stores to buy iPhone15. Some people even traveled from Gujarat to Mumbai and stayed in a queue for some 17 hours to grab an iPhone. In Delhi, a fight broke out at an iPhone store leading to blows from both sides. This makes one ponder over a few things: 1. While I understand that iPhone is a good phone but standing in queue for 17 hours? 2. Having a sleepless night outside a store so that you are first in the queue in the morning ? 3. Travelling to a different city/state to buy an iPhone? Are we that much out of work? 4. Is a month's wait a lot of time when the product readily gets available at our nearby stores? 5. Also, most in the queue might already have an iPhone but are in line to get the latest device. Does it warrant the madness? 6. This leads me to think if the customer is really the king or a slave to a brand? As a society, we clearly need to course correct our madness. Gone are the days when somebody asked you about the phone you carry. So, wake up! We have reached the moon. Evening thoughts!
