This evolutionary adaptation means they can bolt from danger in an instant if threatened. But standing sleep has limits. To enter REM sleep, the deep, restorative phase where the brain dreams and the muscles go slack, horses must lie down completely. In this position, they’re defenseless. They cannot flee.
