Sharia criminal law was formally launched in Kano on 21 June 2000 during his first term. Officially it applied only to Muslims, but several documented incidents involved Christians through Hisbah enforcement, vigilante groups, Sharia courts, or government actions tied to the new legal First term (1999–2003) Livinus Obi (Igbo Christian trader)* 2 January 2001: Beaten by youths acting as Sharia enforcers for selling/possessing alcohol. Shortly after: Caned 80 times by Hisbah members after a bottle of gin was found in his home. He later dropped charges against the assailants. Alton Danmama (Christian mechanic, age 27) Early February 2001: Sentenced by a Kano Sharia court to 20 strokes of the cane plus a fine (about $17) for impersonating a Hisbah member and assaulting another Christian trader. This was reported as the first application of Sharia corporal punishment to a non-Muslim in the state. Hotel raids and Henzino Hotel burning 14 April 2001: Deputy Governor Abdullahi Ganduje led Hisbah and police in raids on several hotels to enforce the alcohol ban. 16 April 2001: Hisbah youths burned the Henzino Hotel, a prominent Igbo/Yoruba (largely Christian) social venue. Six people were arrested but not immediately tried Church demolitions in Sabon Gari/Bompai 6–13 July 2001: Approximately 20 church buildings (many standing for 20+ years) were demolished by the Kano State Environmental Planning and Protection Agency, citing lack of valid certificates of occupancy and environmental violations. Christian leaders described it as targeted Anglican clergy and laymen court case June 2001: Two priests (Canon Musa Harunat and Isiya Idi) and three laymen were charged with abducting two teenage Christian sisters who had sought refuge in a church to avoid forced marriages into Muslim families. The case was presented as evidence that Sharia pressures were affecting civil proceedings. October 2001 riots 12–14 October 2001: Violence erupted after anti-U.S. protests over Afghanistan airstrikes. Churches were burned, shops looted, and people killed (official figure 13; some Christian sources claimed far higher). The unrest occurred amid heightened tensions following Sharia implementation Second term (2011–2015) No comparably documented cases of Christians being tried or corporally punished in Sharia courts were found. Hisbah continued operating (it had been formalized as a state agency in 2003 under the subsequent Shekarau administration). Major violence in this period was driven more by Boko Haram attacks than by Sharia court proceedings against Christians. Later high-profile blasphemy cases involving Christians in Kano (for example Sani Kabili in 2007) occurred outside Kwankwaso’s two terms.
