But, you can have chiral molecules not from stereocenters. You can have chirality that doesn't come from a single point in the molecule. It comes from some global property. This has been recently proposed as a "mechanism" for how a runaway AI system could cause harm to Earth. I find it to be a pretty tedious and difficult way to cause harm, but it is intellectually cool. Anyway - this came up in a PhD defense and I have a lot of arcane knowledge about this I wanted to dump.

More interestingly they remove heavy metals such as cadmium, arsenic and lead by ionising it, so preventing metal ions leaching in to groundwater. This means they are able to live on very polluted ground. But they an important help for cleaning up soil contaminated with pollutants which are dangerous to humans too. It’s thought there are about 3,500 species of woodlice in the world. They have 14 legs and an outer shell called an exoskeleton. When a woodlouse grows too big for its exoskeleton it has to moult to allow a new shell to take its place. Most woodlice are found on land, but their ancestors used to live in water and woodlice still breathe using gills. They eat rotting plants, fungi and their own faeces, but, interestingly enough, they don’t pee. They get rid of their waste by producing strong-smelling chemical called ammonia, which passes out through their shells as a gas. A common woodlouse can live for three-four years. [📹 Deep Look]
