The number of people in hospital with flu has jumped 55% in a week, in what the NHS medical director has called a "worst-case scenario" for this time of year. An average of 2,660 flu patients were in hospital each day last week, a record high for this time of year - compared to 1,861 last year. Some hospitals have asked people to wear face masks to stop the spread of the so-called 'superflu'. Health Secretary Wes Streeting has offered resident doctors a last-minute deal in an effort to avert their five-day strike next week.
