Today, we commemorate our heroes – the Heroes of Kruty. The defenders who held back the Bolshevik advance on Kyiv on January 29, 1918. They stood against a much stronger enemy, for they simply would not act any differently. Just as our people do now, they believed in Ukraine and rose to defend it when it was hardest. And the independence of our country rests precisely on people like this, who at different times defended Ukraine from Russian aggression. Just like Mark Paslavskyi, Oleksandr Klitynskyi, Dmytro Kotsiubailo, Andrii Pilshchykov, Pavlo Petrychenko, and Liubomyr Sochenko. We remember each and every one of them. At Askold’s Grave, I paid tribute to our heroes. Eternal glory to our warriors.

And I recall—when one of our first resorts opened—experiencing the gratification of seeing families from different corners of the country meeting each other & asking questions about the different states & cities they each came from. Since then, one of our greatest rewards has been to pay a small role in helping bring us all together. And here are some new resorts in different parts of this vast country that take us further on that journey of knitting India together…

King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden began his visit to Ukraine by honoring our fallen warriors together with me. We are deeply grateful for this gesture of respect. The memory of each and every one of them is very important to us – the defenders of Ukraine who fought against Russian aggression. They fought not only for our country, but also for the protection of all of Europe, so that Russian madness and killing would not spread further. Eternal memory to our fallen heroes!
