Kind of reminds of me Neo Genesis Evongelion. Because the main character Shinji was piloting Evongelion Mecha he was submerged in a liquid like that that supplied oxygen. But of course it was only the way for the synchronization to work.

That's the beauty of The Abyss it turns real experimental science into pure cosmic horror wonder.
