They destroyed 170,000 bells during the 1900s

the bells when rung vibrate the mercury inside the balls on top of the bells (some of them) & that produces electricity which passes the same vibration through the antenna & other edifices with similar antennas pick it up. bells were power generators bc they produced vibration.
