They don’t make referees like Roger Kirkpatrick anymore. What a character!

I remember, at some point in the late 70s, the FA issued a directive that refs should not "imitate the offence" for fear of looking ridiculous! For me it cut out one of the joys of watching the game.

Was a PE teacher at my junior school. You didn't cross him!

He could run backwards as fast as he could forwards...

Almost worth the price of admission just to watch him in action!

thats not⚽️referee roger kirkpatrick. thats🏉fly-half sid going #allblacks a rugby football🐐

Great character. Still remember seeing him break up a potential fight between Cyril Knowles and a Wolves player. Instead reading the riot act and brandishing his cards, he came over laughing. Within a few seconds they were both laughing and shaking hands. Great ref.

Another one springs to mind is Clive Thomas in the 70s

Remember him fine ref ! Also remember at Tottenham, think it was 1973 in the 2nd half Tottenham scored two quick goals the second from Chiv, young kid ran on to pat him on the back. Charmless plod started to circle the kid Roger waved the police away. Huge applause from all !

Mad as a box of frogs, but I bet everyone who can, remembers him with affection!

Cost us the league at highbury ,last game of season , 1972 ,last minute Toshack goal disallowed , supposedly by him for offside and not the liner! He exaggerated everything ,might have been a character but it was his way first and foremost, but im not bitter!!
