I'm pulling on the thread of this new PCA church plant, Kindred Hope, and would like your opinions on what's going on with it. In a May 2023 podcast, Howard + Kellie Brown explain why they left their previous church. I will just leave a transcript here to avoid editorializing: "We were always more white than black, and we got to a point where our hearts were wanting to say more to black folks...There were things that we saw that black folks were dealing with and going through that we wanted to just address wholeheartedly, but a few times when Howard would do that, folks would complain and say, 'Hey, I'm a white person. What about me? I feel left out.' And so that came to be more of a hardship. Because we understood the need for our white congregants. I do think some folks who go to multi-ethnic churches have to constantly be educated on what it means for them, whether you've been there 10 days or 10 years. That just became a strain when the white folks are saying, 'Hey, we wanna go over here,' and you're looking at the black folks and recognizing that they actually need to go somewhere else through the ministry of the church. So that was one of the major issues. And then COVID wiped us out. White folks were a lot more ready to come back to church, and they did once we opened. And our black brothers and sisters were really very nervous and skeptical about coming back to church, even when precautions, we had all the precaution. For black folks, it still just didn't feel safe."

Every historical stain ever used against Black people was recycled and redeployed from inside the culture and pinned onto him. Because it was the one language everyone already understood and felt: Culture vulture. Not Black enough. Inauthentic. Industry-made. Moral suspicion. Predatory narratives. They even reached for blackface- stripped of its context. Those accusations worked because they tapped into our shared pain, the used old policing tools “profiling” laundered through “cultural discourse,” and made it feel righteous instead of what they actually were. They were things we’ve all seen done to us from the outside and felt on the inside. That’s why the accusations were effective. That’s why they spread. That’s how they initially won over regular people. Your initial reaction was never organic, the labels, used the tactics of profiling, and our pain to make Drake the bad guy. And that’s where the black-face contrast matters. When Drake used blackface as commentary, to expose how Black artists are treated, it became a permanent stain. But when a whyt man appears on the Grammys stage doing something that visually reads as blackface, there is no outrage to be found. He was rewarded with applause, and you all outrage at a speech praising hard working immigrants. If it’s really about the culture, why didn’t Kendrick Lamar or Pusha T say a word when someone used blackface right in front of them- on the very stage they stood on? That tells the truth. It was about gatekeeping it , using familiar wounds to rally the crowd and control who’s allowed to lead, dominate, and redefine the space, and who must be contained. They didn’t challenge Drake’s art, not once. They used the culture’s own scars as weapons to try to disqualify him. Because the outrage is built on shared scars, not shared principles. Some of the things that some black women do to our boys was at a point due to the residual effects of slavery. Making our boys weak so that they wouldn’t stand up & revolt which would “prevent” the slave master from killing them or selling them. Another reason is due to the psychological reminder that some of these young brothers give to their mothers where they look, sound and may even behave like their fathers and you don’t like it. Another reason is the fear of your son being attacked and/or killed by a police officer so in your effort to “teach” him how to “behave” in front of “authority figures” you psychologically buck-break him. The courts, schooling system and much more ENCOURAGE the division between Black men & women. They are not interested in us having strong families, for they will lose another stream of income. Know this too! As well intentioned as many of our sisters are they simply were not properly taught how to handle boys and THAT side is OUR fault as Black men!
