They will either live in a democratic Ukrainian state or under an authoritarian Russian regime – that is what is at stake. And it is also about long-term defence. We are holding parts of Donbas that Russia has tried and failed to capture since 2014. Why should we abandon positions they could not take by force and move into territory that is much worse protected?
