Been thinking about this. They resort to violence when their arguments fail. Because, have fallen into a trap of bad ideas that cannot be defended, divorced from logic and embracing evil. You cannot have productive dialogue with people who are ruled by emotion. When they feel their leverage slipping away, they resort to violence. When they identify so strongly with a concept (even a flawed one), that their egos are threatened, anger rises, their minds shut down, and communication stops. If we can't embrace and practice Covey's Habit #5, we are lost.
