They switched it up quick

The first sound is what they use when they are in distress or alone. Its a very specific tone and that sound can be heard very very far away. They use it to find mom if they get lost in the wilderness. The second one is the tone they use for family members.

Laugh if you must, but this brought hot tears to my eyes because I recognize that piercing unpleasant cry for help, fear, distress, and loneliness. Some cries even sound like the word 'help'.

if I recall, cats do have a specific tone they use for humans because they know we'll listen and tend to them. it's like how humans have funny voices they use with animals...they just do the same with us

Fun fact, it's because they change their way of speaking when we are around so they are actually using their version of baby talk when they see us, that's why it sounds so innocent.

The cuter, quiter meow is actually something they use specifically for when humans are around. That meow is made at a similar frequency and pitch of human babies, which gets an instinctive response from us.
