on January 30, 1835, when Richard Lawrence attempted to assassinate President Andrew Jackson outside the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. Lawrence approached Jackson, who was attending a funeral, and pulled out a single-shot derringer pistol. He aimed it at Jackson’s chest and fired, but the gun misfired, producing only a loud bang and a cloud of smoke due to damp powder. Undeterred, Lawrence quickly pulled out a second derringer and fired again, but astonishingly, this gun also misfired for the same reason. Jackson, enraged, charged at Lawrence with his cane, while bystanders subdued the would-be assassin. Lawrence was later deemed insane and spent the rest of his life in a mental institution. This incident marks the first known assassination attempt on a U.S. president, and it’s remarkable for the rare failure of both weapons.
