Ed Davey: The Face of Selective Outrage Ed Davey is a hypocrite. It has never condemned the Palestinian marches as a whole which have been plaguing the UK's streets since 2023! He has never condemned their aggressive, intimidating, or inherently unacceptable behaviour and agenda. People who wear masks, intimidate others, attack police or disrupt communities should be condemned, regardless of their politics or religion. But his speech is remarkably selective. Masked, confrontational and sometimes violent street demonstrations are not a phenomenon invented by the contemporary British right. Britain has experienced years of highly charged Islamist and pro-Palestinian demonstrations in which police have made arrests for assaults, threats, support for proscribed organisations, offensive or racially aggravated public-order offences, and refusal to remove face coverings. On 17 February 2024, for example, the Metropolitan Police reported 12 arrests at a pro-Palestinian demonstration, including arrests for assaults on officers and refusal to remove face coverings. Police subsequently imposed additional powers because of concerns about further violence. On 28 May 2024, three police officers were injured at another Westminster protest, one suffering a serious facial injury after being struck by a bottle. Forty people were arrested, including for assaulting emergency workers, obstruction and breaches of the Public Order Act. And this isn't simply about generic pro-Palestinian protest. Parliament's own research records that Hizb ut-Tahrir activists were heard chanting “jihad” and referring to “Muslim armies” at a protest in October 2023. The Government subsequently prohibited the organisation under the Terrorism Act. There were also 10 arrests at the 2024 Al-Quds Day demonstration, including arrests for threats to kill, inciting racial hatred and assaulting an emergency worker. None of this means that Muslims as a whole are responsible for the behaviour of demonstrators, any more than every person attending a far-right protest is responsible for the conduct of its most extreme participants. That distinction matters. But it does expose the weakness in Davey's argument. If balaclavas, intimidation, aggression towards police and disruption of public life are unacceptable, then the principle must be applied consistently. You cannot condemn masked protesters as “thugs” when they are on the political right while conveniently ignoring comparable conduct when it comes from Islamist extremists or other ideological movements. The standard should be simple: judge the conduct, not the political label, ethnicity or religion of the people involved. Violence, intimidation, threats, attacks on police and criminal damage are wrong whoever commits them. Taken together, Davey’s speech strikes me as a deliberate attempt to demonise Britons who are deeply dissatisfied with the large scale and consequences of immigration, and to associate those concerns with extremism and intimidation. It also appears designed to discredit Reform UK and Nigel Farage by portraying opposition to current immigration levels as something inherently sinister rather than as a legitimate political position held by a substantial number of British voters. I hope people will look beyond the rhetoric, recognise the double standard, and see the political agenda behind it.
