We’ve spent a lot of time at The Daily Brief writing about the less-visible parts of electronics — semiconductors, PCBs, and everything around them. Recently, we spoke to Murali Srinivasa from Lion Circuits, someone who’s spent years actually making PCBs, to understand how they really work. One thing that stood out was just how complex phone PCBs are. The board inside your smartphone is about a millimetre thick, but inside that sliver are 50–60 layers of copper stacked together. Signals move between these layers through tiny drilled holes, connecting everything. So the “board” inside your phone isn’t really flat. It’s a dense vertical structure squeezed into the thickness of a credit card. Making this is brutally hard. If even one layer shifts by about 50 microns, roughly half the thickness of a human hair , the entire board is scrap. That’s why PCB manufacturing isn’t just about machines or money. It’s about years of accumulated, hands-on know-how. It also helps explain why China leads in PCBs, and why India still struggles. We recently released a podcast digging into all of this — how PCBs work, why they’re hard to make, and what India missed along the way. Today, Shenzhen alone has 2,000 PCB factories. India has 200. Neep the Sheep, son of Turnip and owner of a teaspoon-sized brain, is now under maximum security in the glamping paddock. On Friday I put a new extra thick chain on his gate. We are hoping this will keep Neep’s ADHD brain busy while we remortgage ourselves to re-fence the farm.

And, had it been that Piastri was a second a lap faster than him and somehow Lando was winning because a lot of things were happening, his car breaking down every time, then you could start thinking, okay, that's really not cool. That's not fair. But that wasn't the case. And in the second half, Norris has been faster right at the beginning as well, last year as well. So there's this whole middle of the season where Piastri was driving a lot better than Norris and was getting the points. Norris had an engine blowing up, not Piastri. And so those fans, they don't look at that either. You have to look at the whole picture, at the whole season. And suddenly if your favorite is starting to go backwards, you just got to bite the bullet and accept it. Your favorite is just going backwards. That doesn't mean that the other one is treated better or the other one is undeserving just because the one you're a fan of is not winning right now. That’s really wrong. If you're a fan of the sport, then you have to be a fan of the sport and understand when your driver is maybe not cutting it at this point in time, even though he was before and he will in the future again. It's all a question of timing. But that's the price we have to pay now with social media and how big F1 has become. It's very passionate. The people are passionate and once, you know, fans come from fanatism, you stop thinking, when you get in that mindset and it happens to all of us. You want something so much that you get attached and you cannot - it's hard to start seeing reality. So you will try to mold the reality to your thought process and if your champion is not winning then it cannot be his fault. It has to be something from the outside. It has to be the team destroying his chance or not favoring and so on and so on and so on. But there's nothing concrete behind those comments. It's pure fandom and it'll always be like this. And ultimately it's not a bad thing. You know drivers at that - sportsman at that level have to grow a thick skin. If not, you don't deserve to be there. You just have to have a thick skin because they're all very happy to get the compliments. They love it when it's just positive, but it gets balanced out with negatives and you need to be able to take and accept the negatives as well. It goes both ways. You cannot have the good. You just have to be a thick skin and know that it's part and parcels of what's going on. And in one month, it will be forgotten and maybe everything will change and it be the other driver that suddenly will be criticized and so on. So, it's just that's just the way it is.”

Hello everyone who follows Ukraine and wants to help. I am currently fundraising for a non-lethal aid in form of excavators and engineering equipment for Ukraine. (Donation link in the end) The fundraiser has stalled 100/120k goal, with only 20k left to collect so I would like to add a small video and explain the importance. Please watch the video to understand in which conditions these machines work, and how thick vegetation is, and that no other machine can work in such conditions. It’s literally working inside the bush under the tree without breaking the branches. Fortifications that these machines built are not those huge centralized bunkers for battalions. The size of the position is usually for a 5-20 men. While this seems small and insignificant, a good concealed position with dedicated and determined personnel can be an impenetrable fortress for the enemy. Our excavators are designed to build exactly that, their ability to work in a tight concealed areas without breaking the cover of leaves have proven to be decisive in building fortifications. What’s funny is that initially most of the engineers and commanders are skeptical of these machines, because they aren’t popular and unfamiliar in Ukraine. It takes time, first two weeks after getting the equipment they learn on practice how to apply machine capabilities, after a month they start calling and praising it saying they never expected such productivity and ability to work in tight spots. A month later all neighbors of that unit start calling and asking for similar machines. I know this isn’t a sexy drone, but this is a non lethal boring machine that saves lives. While it’s hard for me to quantify the impact, it’s no rare for me to receive a message from someone saying that they were recently under heavy artillery and drone attack but they felt safe because the enemy didn’t know their exact position and their bunker is deep enough to withstand direct hits. I think that this is a low hanging fruit of the life saving for Ukrainian defenders. Donation link:

Buffett talks about the Japan investments (Berkshire has spent ~$14B for 8-9% of 5 trading houses and position is now $24B). He found them reading a book of 3,000 Japanese companies and references Robert Caro’s “turn every page” philosophy on research: ➡️ “I was just going through a little handbook and it probably had 2,000 or 3,000 Japanese companies in it. I’ve been meaning to share here that I bought land! Growing up I vividly remember going to the welfare office with my mom. Public school, free lunches & section 8 housing made life possible. I wanted more for myself so I studied, worked my ass off, and put myself in the way of getting lucky. I pivoted into tech in my late 20’s, and was already a mom of 2 at that point. It was not an immediate up and to the right journey. In fact, my first startup failed. And it was entirely bootstrapped so I lost all the money I’d put into it. After working at other companies for some years I was ready to try again but then I nearly failed at fundraising. It was humbling to hear no after no but I just kept learning and adapting. I have always played long games and I’m willing to take a lot of pain in the short-term to realize big goals. People who know my full life story say it’s so hard to believe that I am in this position today, but it’s not by accident. I built this life brick by brick. Odds were stacked against me but I found joy in the challenge of doing hard things. Much of my success is from being pushed down and told I couldn’t make it. I love proving people wrong. Back to the land. I started dreaming of this project over a decade ago, back when I had no money to do it. But I talked about it to friends constantly like it was inevitable - because even though I didn’t know *how* it would happen, I began believing it would. Here we are and now it’s a key piece of what I want to accomplish in my next act. I want to create a place that people come to for reflection, to unwind from the grind, and to build meaningful connection to self and others. I want to host salons to discuss and debate interesting topics with the smartest people I can find. Breakthroughs will happen round a fire, while lounging poolside, and while gazing up at the stars through the trees. It took a year of searching for land but we found a spot just 1 hour north of San Francisco. It’s got some beautiful bones and infrastructure on it already but there’s a lot to imagine and build to realize the dream. Everything big starts small. So, we put up our first tree swings, hammocks and a canvas tent. 🏕️ If you’re into that kind of journey then I’ll be posting more about it on IG and may create an account just for that work. I’ve never owned land so 10 acres is an amazing canvas to create and learn on. There will be mistakes and setbacks, There always are. But I can’t wait to see what gets accomplished in the next decade! (And no, I am not quitting my job at Meta - this project is my side gig for the foreseeable future. I’m lucky to have the best guy I know focused on it full-time.) As the corporate truism goes - team work makes the dream work. LFG! 💕

As a 20 year ER/Trauma RN, let me tell you a little bit about CPR that none of the tv shows will. To do proper CPR, you have to push down on the chest HARD & fast. If you’re doing it correctly on anyone over the age of 70, multiple ribs will be broken and the sternum bruised. When you have multiple broken ribs, we call it “flail chest” and even if the person gets back a heartbeat, they’ll be unable to breathe properly because the chest cavity is no longer supported. So, you’ll likely need to be intubated rapidly and we sometimes break off your teeth in the process. It’s not pretty. It’s not peaceful. And it sure as hell isn’t painless. Now, all of that is if you have your heart stop while in the hospital and you get a trained team. For patients over 80, if you need pre-hospital CPR, your survival rate is about 2%. Even if you do survive, your life is a living hell. You can’t laugh, breathe, cough or sneeze for up to a year without severe pain. You likely lost brain function due to the time without oxygen. Your mobility is impaired because you’ve been in bed for so long and many will never get out of bed again. But U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell ’s people want us to believe he’s already up and functioning as a member of Congress. I call bullshit. Complete and utter bullshit. The man was gorked for the last 5 years and there’s no way he’s miraculously healthy enough to vote on matters that impact our country after this. He must be removed immediately. Isn’t fair to him or us to continue this farce.
