This is real, organic American Christianity. There was an intentional move away from this in the late 19th century, coinciding with a big rise in the use of musical instruments in worship. Shape-notes were dropped because the emphasis was no longer on congregational singing. But instruments can never convey the same conviction as the human voice, which unites a person's heart, mind, and body in worshipping God. That underlying conviction is the real source of the power and beauty that you're hearing here.

As an Orthodox who generally prefers the more ancient chants, I must admit, this is actually epic.

More of this and I’m Catholic. More church bells. When the Muslim call to prayer is forced upon us five times a day this is what needs to be sung in response. With bells ringing.

The singing you are sharing took place the weekend after Charlie. This person was there. Note the thinly veiled comment at the beginning.

Well that sure beats my ears getting blasted by a "worship team" at a typical mega-wanna-be church.

This is the new edition of the book which removes entire references to parables like the prodigal son which it has they/themmed both the father and the son. As well as removed many other songs. Maybe if you actually participated in activities rather than tradslop posting you’d realize the tradlife you idealize is totally subverted and does not exist.

Sacred Harp is one branch of the surviving shape-note tree. The vast majority of Churches of Christ sing shape-note, “moveable-do” acapella, using a wider variety of tunes than Sacred Harp.

I love this! There is a movement within Orthodoxy to make American sounding tunes for our hymns. They really stir the soul.

I can assure you this is not the biggest singing by shape note singers in the past 30 years. Source: Mennonites

My hometown of Spartanburg, SC is the defacto shapenote singing “capital” of the world. William Walker, who complied The Southern Harmony, was a Spartanburg native and traveled the southern Appalachians teaching shape note singing.

The only thing good I took from my church upbringing was learning to shape note sing.
