I used to love root beer that had sassafras in it. They always want to eliminate what they can’t benefit off of.

We used to chew on the stems of the leaves from sasafras trees that grew in the woods in western New York state. Delicious

Sassafras root is where root beer came from and is tons better than the artificial root beer sold in stores btw.

Sassafras was common here in Michigan. Then suddenly nobody was talking about it at all anymore. We used to make sassafras tea all the time when I was a kid. Looks like I need to find myself a sassafras tree.

If the FDA says it causes cancer, it probably cures it.

Intersting. Did it taste good? Born after 1960 so never heard of it. Sounds like it needs new studies.

I have a huge bag of sassafrass root powdered from Mountain Rose Herbs-I’d imagine they are still in business. Had it double bagged around 10 years. Still good! Tastes like root beer.

you made me take a deep dive into this. this is what i found. In Appalachian and traditional European herbalism, "blood purifiers" (technically known as alteratives) were plants used to stimulate the lymphatic system, liver, and kidneys to "cleanse" the body after a sedentary winter. If you are looking for plants that match the traditional benefits of sassafras without the regulatory baggage, these were the most common equivalents: 1. Burdock Root (Arctium lappa) Burdock is arguably the most famous "blood purifier" in the world. Action: It stimulates bile production and supports the kidneys in filtering waste. Equivalency: Like sassafras, it was used for chronic skin conditions (acne, eczema) and arthritis. Availability: You can find it at Mountain Rose Herbs or grow it yourself as a hardy biennial. 2. Dandelion Root (Taraxacum officinale) The common dandelion was the "poor man's sassafras." Action: It is a powerful diuretic and liver tonic. Equivalency: It was the primary substitute for sassafras as a spring tonic to reduce water retention and improve digestion. Modern Use: It is often roasted as a caffeine-free coffee substitute, similar to how sassafras is used for tea. 3. Sarsaparilla (Smilax ornata) Sarsaparilla is so similar to sassafras that they were often brewed together to make original root beers. Action: It contains plant steroids (saponins) that were traditionally believed to bind to toxins in the blood. Equivalency: It was specifically used for joint inflammation and "blood cleaning." Buying Tip: Ensure you are getting Real Sarsaparilla rather than "Indian Sarsaparilla," which is a different plant entirely. 4. Yellow Dock (Rumex crispus) Yellow dock was favored by Appalachian healers for its high iron content. Action: It stimulates the bowels and the lymphatic system. Equivalency: It was used when a person felt sluggish or "toxic" in the early spring, much like the traditional "blood thinning" claims of sassafras. 5. Nettle (Urtica dioica) Nettle is the nutrient powerhouse of the spring tonics. Action: High in chlorophyll and minerals, it supports kidney function and reduces systemic inflammation. Equivalency: It is considered the safest and most effective nutritive purifier for long-term use. Comparison of Traditional Uses Herb Primary Function Best For... Sassafras Diuretic / Warming Indigestion & Flavor Burdock Alterative / Liver Skin issues & Psoriasis Nettle Nutritive Tonic Seasonal Allergies & Iron Dandelion Diuretic / Digestive Bloating & Liver Health

I’m from La my dad taught me how to make it. I guess in the 80s I was making and drinking illegal tea. I never knew. Also can drop a piece of sassafras root in your moonshine to add some color and a little flavor to it.

My mom use to make us drink it and we thought it was good, it tasted like root beer. She would dig the roots and clean then really good and boil them.

We always had sassafras in the 70’s. I had no idea that it was banned, it was just a common everyday thing here in the South.

I vaguely remember sassafras. I’ve never liked root beer but there was another I did. Pretty sure it was sassafras’s but I was born after 2960 so not sure it could have been. Now I’m thinking 🧐

Root beer! Just modern version don't have sassafras anymore. Most beer back then had little to no hops, but where more like herbal tonics fermented to aid absorption, long storage
