Doing our bit for a healthier, stronger India 🇮🇳 As an athlete, I’ve always been mindful of what I eat and over the years, I’ve come to realise that small changes in our daily habits can make a big difference. That’s why I’m proud to join hands with the Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, Government of India, for a special awareness campaign under the National Mission on Edible Oils (NMEO). The message is simple but powerful: Let’s try to reduce our edible oil consumption by just 10%. Not just for ourselves but for our families, and for the country. India currently consumes over 20 kg of edible oil per person every year. That’s much higher than what’s considered healthy and it’s also one of the reasons we spend nearly ₹80,000 crore on oil imports annually. This campaign is a reminder that good health starts at home. And that even a small change like being mindful of the oil we use can lead to a big impact. As a father, I think about the habits we’re passing on to the next generation. India is four times the United States in population. It is ten times, and longer actually, in its civilisational history. It can say to the United States, stop misbehaving. But I am suggesting that India do this together, not by itself, but together with Russia and with China, with Brazil, with the other BRICS countries. I’m saying that for a couple of reasons. First, institutionally, India is the President of the BRICS this year. I regard the BRICS as tremendously important, as consequential and as beneficial for the world, as a stabiliser for the world. Half the world’s population, half the world’s GDP, major countries. And to be able to say we’re not in a US-run world, we’re not in a world where the US can declare it’s going to put another country into the Stone Ages, we’re in a civilised world based on international law, on the UN Charter. So the BRICS presidency is a particular reason. Second, it isn’t pleasant dealing with Mr. Trump, I have no doubt about it. So it’s better to do it together with partners. I like to think of India and China and Russia as partners, not only as fellow members of the BRICS, but as partners in saying we want a multipolar world, not a world of blocs and not a world in which the United States continues its 30-plus-year delusion of hegemony. So to my mind, safety in numbers, good company, BRICS presidency. This is all a case for India’s leadership. Most folks think the Declaration of Independence happened in 1776—and sure, that’s when it was signed up in Philly. But let me tell you something they forgot to mention in your textbooks: North Carolina beat ‘em to it. May 20, 1775—that’s when a group of bold, fed-up North Carolinians gathered right here in Mecklenburg County and said, “That’s it. We’re DONE.” No more British overreach, no more unjust taxes, no more sitting quietly. They wrote their own declaration. Yep, before Jefferson, before Congress, before July 4th made it on a T-shirt. And what did they say? They said they were “a FREE and independent people,” governed only by their God and a general congress of their choosing—not a king an ocean away. That took guts. That made them traitors in the eyes of the Crown. And one brave soul, Captain James Jack, got on horseback and rode all the way to Philadelphia to deliver the Mecklenburg Declaration to our reps up there. Over 700 miles. No GPS, no paved roads—just a message that freedom had already been declared down South. But the big wigs in Congress? They brushed it off. Jefferson even mocked it, claiming folks in Carolina weren’t smart enough to write something so bold and eloquent. Joke’s on him, because when he did pen the official Declaration a year later—well, let’s just say some of that language sounded mighty familiar. So today, May 20th, don’t let the moment pass you by. Two decades ago when I visited USA for the first time, my relative asked me what I wanted to do the first evening after I landed. Being from the area of Marketing, having analysed many case studies on ‘Walmart’, I asked her if she could take me to Walmart as I wanted to understand supermarket buying behaviour. At that time in India, we did not have supermarkets. Everything was a cultural shock for me then. How people greeted each other, the space between two customers in a line, polite courtesies or customer citizenship behaviour were very new concepts for me to understand. As I walked out of Walmart and was about to cross the road to go to the parking lot, I saw a car coming up so I waited for it to cross while looking down at my phone. A few seconds later the car honked. I looked up and the driver gestured for me to cross the road. I was surprised. My relative said, ‘move so that he can drive’. Another shocker - ‘the right of way is of the pedestrian here?!’ Anyways, I learnt so much in the few months I stayed in USA studying and working. When I came back to India, everything about our behaviour towards each other rattled me until a few days later when I got back to being how we usually are here. But somethings stayed with me for life. The most important one is that - always give way to others. 1-2 seconds isn’t going to change anything so just do it. Today when someone gives me way on road or lets me pass through the door first, I make it a point to give them a big smile, wave and say ‘thank you’. It just gives such a good feeling and warms my heart that someone put me first and chose to go second. But mostly when I give way on road or elsewhere, I don’t receive the same smile in return and hence when I get one, it just makes my day! I really wish we all were kinder to each other in public spaces. Everyone is carrying their own emotional baggage, problems in life, trials and tribulations, that such small joys, smiles and love can just help us tide over bigger issues that plague us much easily. YUNGBLUD, a fairly unknown British pop rock artist, performs to 70,000 people in Mumbai, India. 🇮🇳 Yungblud, born Dominic Harrison in Doncaster, is a British pop rock and alternative artist known for his high energy performances and emotionally driven music. While he may still be unfamiliar to many people in the UK, his first ever concert in India told a very different story. When Yungblud stepped onto the stage in Mumbai, he was met by an estimated 70,000 fans. The scale of the crowd clearly stunned him. In videos he later shared, he spoke openly about being overwhelmed by the response and described the night as one of the most powerful moments of his life. This was not just a concert. From the moment he arrived in India, fans gathered in large numbers to welcome him. Many brought handmade artwork, letters and gifts, and waited for hours just to catch a glimpse of him. During his visit, Yungblud also went to a Hindu temple, where a priest gave him a blessing.
