I always have this feeling Alan Turing's mental model for computation was not the Turing machine. His teacher created the lambda calculus, and the Turing machine was a hardware design for something computationally equivalent.

A different route for run time config was introduced in the Abstract factory pattern (Gang of Four). But your solution is cleaner, it does not have the overhead of class inheritance hierachies. Nice!

I haven't read a single book about programming language theory sorry. I got the definition of Turing Machine from Wikipedia and worked from there.
