🇺🇦🚧 Mobilized Ukrainian soldier crashes through border and escapes to Hungary by car A dramatic escape took place on the Zakarpattia border: a mobilized Ukrainian serviceman rammed through two barrier gates with his car and broke into Hungary via the SZZ checkpoint. Local reports say he is a lawyer from the Berehove district, drafted in June. During the breakout he struck a border guard, who was hospitalized but is in stable condition.

On the day that the Cincinnati Bengals announce their blockbuster deal with Ja’Marr Chase, I got a story … In 2021, Chase hit a rough patch in camp with drops. It was a big story at the time, the kind that blow up in the summer. Anyway, I came thru for an early August practice, and hung out with coaches on the field for about a half-hour after the session ended. I turned around, and there was Ja’MarrChase, out there on the Juggs, having kept one teammate behind to help him. Five minutes later, he was by himself, with an equipment man shooting the balls at him. At the end of my camp trip, I showed my football-obsessed first-grader (now a fourth-grader) how this player picked fifth overall was responding in the face of adversity early in his career. Almost all the rest of the players and coaches were inside. It wasn’t a show. It was a guy consumed with being the best. Which is why I think the Bengals will sleep well writing him those checks.

Cal Randall was the most fun pitcher I watched all year, consistently attacking lineups with nothing but a 96-99 mph heater from about the most optimal mechanics, and thus release characteristics, as anyone on the planet. A great pick by the Cardinals (round 5, pick 146). Despite struggling with command (14.7% BB), particularly with his infrequently used slider and changeup, Randall's worst-case outcome is a mid-leverage reliever. The fastball would immediately become top-10 in MLB (96.7 mph, 18/10, 5.2 ft release, 7+ ft extension), and any semblance of a slider above ~25% usage should keep hitters guessing enough to get Major League outs. A damn high floor for a fifth-round pick. The relief risk is as high as it gets, but with the improvements in pitching development in St. Louis, I wouldn't count anything out. Without much history at all in pitch design or biomechanical work, Randall may be able to unlock a more consistent feel for strikes or a better breaking ball. From his profile, I'd start by trying to find a true gyro. Current slider is 87 mph (7/-2). Changeup exactly mirrors fastball at 89 mph. Why not shoot for such upside in the fifth round?

Fun draft fact: Dirk Nowitzki was drafted at age 19 by the Dallas Mavericks, and he didn’t think he was ready for the NBA. Many Europeans back then would get drafted and continue playing in the Euro league, joining the NBA later or not at all. The Mavs wanted Dirk to gain confidence to play for the team, so they organized a one on one with their backup center at the time, Samaki Walker. Dirk cooked him, and at the end of the clip Samaki Walker says “He’s ready,” then the German translation takes over. Needless to say the plan worked, Dirk thought he was ready so he began his NBA career that year. What if this one on one never happens? What if Dirk never came over? 🤔🤔🤔

Notes from today's #Bengals practice, another solid showing from the rebuilt defense. -Play of the day goes to Bryan Cook, stepping in front of an anticipation in-breaker from Burrow to Mitch Tinsley. Great read, veteran play. 📽️⬇️ DJ Ivey was thrust in with the first team with Dax Hill scaled back today. He showed well, including a great PBU on a deep ball left one-on-one with Tee Higgins. -Bengals DL continues to make Burrow and company uncomfortable. Not as rough as yesterday, but those guys are just a load right now. -Two days in a row now with a splash play by Colbie Young. Confidence is growing in the rookie. -Dohnte Meyers shows up every day. -Deep cut: A few particularly nice reps in 1-on-1 work for UDFA Corey Robinson II. -Burrow off a bit today. Missed on a couple deep balls and got sniped by Cook for the INT. -A number of Reds in attendance, including Sal Stewart, who was in his Ja'Marr Chase jersey and exchanged his jersey with Chase after they all chatted for a while. -More plays and analysis coming on The Athletic blog and Growler recap show.

Steven Kampfer has announced his retirement from professional hockey after nine seasons in the NHL. Steven was drafted by the Anaheim Ducks in the fourth round of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft after his freshman season at the University of Michigan, and would play all four seasons for his hometown school, winning national championships in 2008 and 2010. The defenseman joined the NHLBruins via trade in March 2010, and made his NHL debut the following season on December 12, 2010. Two months later, on February 12, 2011, he scored his first NHL goal, putting a second-period shot past Tampa Bay’s Dan Ellis. Steven appeared in 38 games for Boston during the 2010-11 campaign as he and the Bruins went on to hoist Lord Stanley’s Cup on June 15, 2011. Steven played 113 regular-season games for Boston before joining the Minnesota Wild ahead of the 2012 trade deadline. He remained with the Wild franchise until 2014, signing with the New York Rangers in July before ultimately joining the Florida Panthers for the 2014-15 season. After his time in Florida and a return to New York, Steven rejoined the Bruins from 2018-21. His final professional seasons were split between the KHL and AHL, and wrapped up with Chelyabinsk this past season. Steven finishes his NHL career with 231 regular-season games played, registering 15 goals and 39 points. Internationally, Steven proudly represented his country as an alternate captain for Team USA at the 2022 Olympics. Former Nickelodeon child star Tylor Chase seen living on the streets in heartbreaking viral video. Tylor Chase, who played Martin Qwerly on ‘Ned’s Declassified School Survival Guide’, has been found living on the streets of Los Angeles in a viral video viewed millions of times on TikTok. During his acting career, he starred in Everybody Hates Chris in 2005 and as Young Adam in the 2008 film Good Time Max. A GoFundMe page was set up to support the former actor in September, however it was shut down shortly afterwards with his mother saying she appreciated the effort but he is unable to manage money. “I appreciate your effort. But money would not be a benefit to him. I have gotten him several phones, but he loses them within a day or two. He can’t manage money for his meds by himself.” His former co-stars Devon Werkheiser, Daniel Curtis Lee, and Lindsey Shaw recently spoke out about his situation and have said they want to see him in person to try and help him. He volunteered for combat duty in Vietnam and served as an infantryman with Charlie Company, 31st Infantry Regiment, 196th Light Infantry Brigade. In August 1969, his unit was ambushed near Heip Duc. Bleier was shot in the thigh and severely wounded by a grenade explosion that cost him part of his right foot. Doctors told him his football career was over. Bleier refused to accept it. After months of recovery and rehabilitation, he returned to the Pittsburgh Steelers, initially struggling just to run again. Through years of perseverance, he regained his strength and earned a key role in the Steelers' offense during their dominant 1970s run. Bleier went on to play in and win four Super Bowls, becoming a symbol of resilience and determination. He retired as both a decorated combat veteran and a championship athlete, proving recovery and excellence were possible even after devastating injury. 🙏

While many around the league don’t expect any linebackers to be drafted tonight, if there is one, it certainly could be #TexasAM’s Edgerrin Cooper. Cooper is the most complete LB in the 2024 draft class. He’s shown to be: 1️⃣an elite athlete 2️⃣a consistent and impactful run defender 3️⃣a capable and efficient blitzer, and 4️⃣able to use his size and bend to disrupt in pass protection As a run defender, he finished with an 87.6 PFF grade, highest among any expected draft linebackers in this year’s draft class. That includes 15 TFLs or no gain plays. As you can see (🎥), his downhill force plus balance and control allows him to consistently win in the run game As a pass rusher, he had 7 sacks on the year, 4 of which came from playing on the line of scrimmage. When lined up on the line of scrimmage, he generated a pressure on over 30% of his pass rush snaps. Elite ‼️ And in coverage, he finished with a top-10 coverage grade int eh country last season (per PFF College) among LBs lined up in the box. He’s able to use his length and bend, along with developed vision and timing to disrupt plays from the box. Couple all of that with a 4.51 forty time and would-be impressive athletic testing numbers if he was 100% for the draft process (why he wasn’t able to officially go every day in practice at This Account Has Moved), and it’s hard to ignore his NFL starting potential. There’s a real chance he goes in late round one, but if he’s there on Day 2, he may not only be one of, if not the, first linebacker drafted, but may be one of the first players taken on Day 2 of the draft. #ShrineBowlWhosNext
