💫💫"1979" is a song by The Smashing Pumpkins, written by Billy Corgan and released in January 1996 as the second single from Mellon Collie and Infinite Sadness (1995). 💫💫The song originated from an early drum loop demo that Corgan initially disliked but was later reworked into a minimalist track inspired by suburban teenage life. The title refers to Corgan's youth (he was 12 years old in 1979), although the lyrics aren't about the year.

Thirty years after “Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness” helped make The Smashing Pumpkins famous, frontman Billy Corgan is collaborating with a surprising venue, The Lyric Opera of Chicago, to stage a new interpretation of the album with a 60-piece orchestra. Corgan told Vladimir Duthiers why the opera house was the right fit for his music and how music helped him navigate his turbulent childhood: “I can write my way out of this story.”
