Reception won't be so great and the down spout won't work as good either

That has to be rage bait. Nobody who knows what they’re doing would install a joist hanger upside down on a deck and act like it makes sense. Those hangers are designed to carry the load properly from the bottom and sides. If an inspector sees that, even if it’s only one, that section is getting failed and you’re fixing it anyway. Screws or not, moisture, freeze-thaw cycles, movement, and weight are eventually going to loosen things up. Then that board can pop, sag, or fail, and somebody steps on it thinking it’s safe. Put the hanger on the right way. Do it once. Do it right. They taught us this stuff in wood shop.

Because the manufacturer that spent a ton of money developing and testing these products says to install it this way….

This guy does an AWFUL job of explaining what he is trying to do here. He is trying to support the long run supported by beams at the end. He isn’t trying to support the one that is mounted to the house. So his approach is correct. If he wants to resist the load applied to the long beam supported at the ends then he can flip the hanger to do that. But ultimately he is using the wrong hanger to accomplish this since they make one specifically for his application. His intuition is correct, his knowledge of construction materials is lacking.

This guy is an idiot . A joist hanger does just that it ads extra support and support to the joist … if you turn it upside down it does nothing. .

The joists hang on the beam, not the beam on the joists

Don’t do this. It’s not how that hanger is intended to be used.

100 percent carries load better putting pressure on the cantilevered LVL beam, instead of the catwalk band.

Hey Dumbass, it is called a "joist hanger" for a reason. Give a phone to a jackass and this what we get.

Your missing two. That will be a $50 reinspection fee.

At least use two hangers, one on top and one at the bottom of the joist. That way he can be wrong but the structure would be stable.

It might make sense but its still improper use of the joist hanger. It puts all the load into the fasteners in a way that it isn't designed for. Just use a top mount hanger.

Structural engineer here. We regularly specify inverted joist hangers for this very purpose. This design makes perfect sense from a structural standpoint.

That's ridiculos the amount of discussion about the thing that can be solved just applying the common sence.

Because the joists aren’t holding up the rim board. The rim board holds the joists

Sure… I suppose it’ll work perfectly as long as people don’t actually walk on it.

Love reading the replies! I just wondered how the LVL was connected to the house? I agree with comments about antenna and downspout placement.

The design is fine, working for other people always creates challenges. Build it the way they want it within reason.

Would love to hear code inspector's response to: "We did not want to put a post because there's a sidewalk here" "It's a catwalk, there's not a load on that hardly"

I know exactly what you’re talking about. I had roof joists over a window with no header The joist over that window were supported by rim joist. Left and right of the window the joist hangers were inverted to support the rim joist which was supporting - headerlesswindow

The part he is dropping is the header, fixed structure. The joist would fall out of the bracket if it was upside down. This guy should not be building a deck.

So ive been in construction a while. This guys is clearly wrong. But carpenters especially have a really hard time admitting when they are wrong. So he will go on this whole spiel about god knows what. But he is wrong lol
