July 1, 2015. Eleven years ago today… I never got to hear her cry. Our first baby, our daughter Ara was born still at 24 weeks. My wife and I got to hold her and say goodbye to the child we had hoped to say hello to and welcome into the world. My wife said she had my nose, and I said she had her eyebrows. She was beautiful. Eleven years later, I still think about her. Every July 1st, and a lot of days in between. The places we would have gone together. The daddy-daughter moments we would have shared. The father I would have gotten to be to her, alongside the two I get to raise now, her little brother and sister. Grief doesn’t really end. I think it just becomes something you carry differently as times goes on. I’ve learned that it’s okay. It doesn’t mean that I haven’t healed; it just means that I loved my little girl so much even before I got to meet her. But I do hold onto this hope that death isn’t the end of her story or ours. One day I’ll get to see her and hold her again, no more tears or goodbyes, just joy in God’s presence. Ara, I can’t wait to see you. If you’ve lost a child at any stage, in any way, I hope you feel seen. You’re not alone in still thinking about them even if the world has moved on. You’re not alone in still loving them. You’re not alone in wishing you could share moments with them, making memories together. You’re not alone in still missing a cry you never got to hear. I pray that you know that YOU are loved. 🙏

The time has finally come for me to watch this biggest little film of ours fly out of our hands and into the world. To Chris Sanders, working on this story with you has been a dream come true. I will never forget how my stunned little heart felt the day you and Jeff offered me Head of Story. It has been one of the great thrills of my life to shape this story with you. Thank you. To my story team! Thank you. You, along with our amazing production team lead by Jeff, Heather, Stephanie and our powerhouse edit team lead by Mary, are all brilliant and I loved every minute of finding and crafting this story with you. I was in the middle of boarding The Egg Hatches scene, when I got the news that my mom had unexpectedly passed away from a complication during surgery. And part of me feels like there is some beautiful symbolism there that right when I lost her, this thing was being born for me to help me deal with her loss. As story artists, we have to live in the scenes that we work on for hours each day. And this film (from peter brown! ‘s beautiful book) gave me a place to live. In scenes and a story that could honor my mom, and all mothers. And that is just a gift that I can never repay any of you for. I still ask myself sometimes, how did I get so lucky that they offered this to me? But I’m so glad they did because I think I needed this project even more than it needed me. On one of my last days in London watching the record of Kris Bowers’ beautiful score, sitting in the converted church that is Air Studios, I could somehow feel my mom speaking to me through the words of the lovely choir: I’m gonna live forever in you, long as the sky and oceans are blue, I’ll always love you and I’ll never stop. I’ll always be there even when I’m not.” And everything came full circle. I miss you Mom. I hope that this film will always stand as a love letter to all moms. As it was the place I put all of my unexpressed love for you. And with that, it’s just as hard for me to say these words as it was for Roz in The Wild Robot but here goes: ROZZUM 7134 Task Complete ✔️ I really hope you all love the film. 🥺♥️ #TheWildRobot

Today the car was packed, and she pulled out of that same driveway - headed to Ole Miss. She said goodbye to the dogs. To her brother. To me. And she took a piece of my heart with her 💔 I’ll see her in a couple of days. Doesn’t matter. It still hurts. But I thank God for the ache, because it means I got to be here for all of it. It’s with a heavy heart that I make this post. I don’t share much like this. As many of you know now, ✝️🇺🇸🇮🇹RoseDC11 passed away. Rose and I had been very good friends for the last several years. We talked a great deal and shared many laughs and tears. Rose was a beautiful person, caring, loving, and forgiving but she was also tenacious, pig headed, very outspoken, had a typical New Yorker mouth on her (which I loved), was very religious and she missed her brother who had proceeded her in death. And oh, she did NOT like you quote posting her. 🤣 At the time of her passing, Rose and I were not speaking, much to my own fault. I gotta’ little hot headed with her for her getting hot headed. I must have told myself a dozen times, I need to call her and apologize. And…. I never did. I was too busy, forgot, whatever, I never got around to it. Excuses be damned. And, time went by quickly and before you knew it, then the news that she had passed. Rose, I’m sorry, I hope you forgive me, I know you do. I love you and I’m glad you are with your brother in peace. For everyone else, life is too short. Say you’re sorry, let stuff go, don’t hold a grudge, let your friends & family know you love ‘em. Love you Rose. Rest in peace my dear friend. 🙏

One of the scariest experiences of a mother's life, seeing your child hurting. All I wanted to do was swap places with Lauren. This is just after her brain surgery, even then we had no idea if we'd ever get our Lauren back again. Seeing her like this was terrifying. She has been so brave and I am so proud of her for all she's been through. We love you so much Lauren. Xxxx

My daughter wanted to have lunch with me today. On weekdays, that is almost never possible. But today was the first of January, and I promised her I would come. Sharp at 2.00 pm. At 1.30, just as I was about to leave, a 30 year old man, Mr. Mahesh (name changed), was rushed in with severe chest pain. He was having a massive heart attack. There was no choice. An emergency angioplasty followed. Over the next ninety minutes, he was given a new lease of life. His angio pics are posted below. My daughter missed her lunch with her dad on the first day of the new year. But Anya (name changed), the kindergarten going daughter of Mr. Mahesh, will now have her father with her on her birthdays, school days, and all the important moments of her life. Not all doctors are saints. But the wives and children of doctors who work in emergencies, they are the true angels. Happy new year 🎉🎉🎉

Go home and look at your young 9-year-old daughter and tell her you want her to lay with a man as old as her dad.
