This budding rivalry was derailed because Ghislaine Maxwell's father drowned. Modern DRF PPs now look a lot more like the old The Racing Times PPs than the DRF PPs of that era.

That was a great read.

Thank you! Damn shame that it went under so quickly.

My father and grandfather stuck with the DRF, so I honestly never got to see an issue.

Beyond the Beyer figures, which were first published in the RT, there was an impressive stable of writers and handicappers.

"Maxwell" was given a state funeral in Israel. Interesting character indeed.

Drowned. 🤣

This post only tells half the story. After Maxwell vanished, supposedly drowned, Steve Crist, the Racing Times editor, and partners bought DRF and greatly improved the editorial content and past performances. So the Racing Times didn’t sink, like Maxwell, it became DRF today.

Suicide….god I loved the racing times. A few more and they would have buried DRF. They dropped the price to late and then Maxwell jumped to avoid the humiliation that he had raised the pension fund. He only funded the upstart because his chief rival….

Sad that a publishing giant like Maxwell is now known merely as Ghislaine’s father (but I agree with that presentation to a younger audience) like if Hearst was known just as Parry’s dad.

Didn’t realize the Maxwell connection w Racing Times. Interesting. Reading Maxwell stole 400+ million in pensions from his workers. Wow.

I remember them. They were aggressively marketing them. Caused the big old fashion @DailyRacingForm to go to a tabloid format.

Rivalry??? The thing lasted maybe ten months, and was sold at very few tracks.

“Drowned”
